This is a great way to get all doctors who care out of the profession. Healthcare is always going to have the most severe consequences when mistakes are made. A publicly accessible score would mean that being a doctor means giving up privacy.

I'm not sure how it works in other countries but here there is a medical board that will hear cases and you can lose your license. I would guess a similar system exists in most places in Europe. Being brought before the board is basically like fighting a court case. I don't imagine most professions have this hanging over them combined with the amount of opportunities to get into such a situation.

I think you’re right though. It’s not that people don’t care. It’s that we’ve painted ourselves into a corner of suck and we don’t know how to get out.

Right now I am reading William Gibson’s Neuromancer for the first time and guess what, back in 1984 there are uses of “they” in a situation where gender of a hypothetical singular third person is irrelevant. It is not confusing in the slightest, compared to a completely new artificially created word.

As a writer, he can make sure that he crafts a situation so that they is unambiguous. I have tried using it in my personal life only to stumble on whether they is one or many.

That's why I settled on borrowing a word that has proven its mettle

(Edit: I used "he" here because William Gibson seemed to identify as a guy, but Gibson's gender is completely irrelevant to this.)

I think we shift to what we have the capacity to care for. Startups care immensely about each bug and customer because there's a small customer base. Once your inflow comes from millions of users, your capacity to care for the individual is diminished and you begin caring about something at a higher level of scale

Same goes for the urban planning example. Regulation and standards attempt to address problems at scale over individual implementations.

Are there definitely people who don't care at that level either? Certainly, but there are definitely people who do care, who just don't have the capacity to care at the minute level

Buddy “I only buy things that I am convinced I need when I’m convinced I need to buy them” isn’t the demonstration that you’re immune to advertising that you seem to be trying to make.

Let me guess, when you are convinced that it is time to buy something that you need, you tend to buy from brands that you trust are of high quality or value — in a way that’s totally disconnected from and unrelated to any advertising or marketing efforts though?

If you're not directly responsible for them I wouldn't bother. That they're still in the position they're in is indicative of a problem in management and it won't change, no matter how much you push for change. Just collect the paycheck and look for something better, or create something better.

You seem to have missed the criteria that I gave: namely that I buy stuff that I'll derive direct value from now or VerySoon™.

As for brands, obviously that's a thing but it's not always due to propaganda / ads -- often it's also about trying a few and sticking to what you have observed works best (or is longer lasting, or both).

Ha. The traffic curb example is actually a good one. I don’t think it’s an excuse to build a potentially dangerous ramp because you aren’t a cyclist yourself. People who design ramps should be capable to do it properly. Imagine it were a ramp for wheelchairs and they would have decided that a 20 degree slope is doable.

I don't disagree with you that people who design these things should be capable. That isn't what the post is about though, it's about whether or not they care.
