I think what Apple is pushing for is computing efficiency. It still gets faster but with much less power. Focusing on performance solely would be the wrong way to evaluate these chips. https://www.tomsguide.com/news/apple-m3-chip

This drives me crazy. Apple plays the market like Nintendo. Pick something that no one cares about, do it better than anyone else, and make a big deal about it. I dream of a world where instead of a marketing company becoming a top 3 tech company, a tech company would have. Wonder what they would have done for their laptop... Or maybe this is just an inevitable outcome of capitalism/human biology where a veblen goods…

What a weird take. Literally every "tech" company is chasing Apple's silicon but you are trying to claim that they're not a tech company. Let me guess, iPhones and iPads aren't tech either, right?

Intel straggler here ! When M1 hit I was certain I would get a M Apple in a year or two when they iron out the transition. It was just leaps and bounds ahead of others and the pricing was great. Now I think AMD and Intel caught up enough, Apple didn't keep the momentum, and they do standard Apple pricing discrimination - I think I'll take a gamble on Framework AMD version. I really like the idea behind the self-repai…

I have a 12th gen Framework 13", 13" M1 Air, and a 15" M2 Air. I use the Framework laptop for work because I need to use Linux. The Framework laptop is mediocre just like pretty much all PC laptops. The hinges are awful, if you pick up the laptop upright, about 50% of the time the screen falls flat 180 degrees. The trackpad is arse in Linux. If you're lucky you can probably get 5 hours battery life, but on a realisti…

This is where I am. I have several PCs, a 15" Intel MBP, a 16" M2 Max MBP, an M2 MBA, and a 14" M1 Pro MBP. If I didn't have to use the PCs, I wouldn't because of how good the Macs have been for me. My team and I do a combination of web/app development, media production, and 2D/3D graphics. While we won't be replacing our PC towers anytime soon, our laptops are going to be Macs going forward with the exception of testing on the PCs we have. I can run Autodesk Fusion 360 and Blender on my MBA well enough that it makes no sense for us to force ourselves onto the more mediocre experience.

more like "a hundred bucks less". The M1's go for maybe half... if you're lucky. Most are more.

Because there's a newer model, which is now true for the M2 ones too?

M1’s took a hit because multiple processors came out each gen. Remember: the M1 was superseded by both the Pro & the Max (and the unites but that’s not in a MacBook).

By the time the M2 came around ppl knew what was up. So you might be able to find a bog standard M1 that low (they do show up) due to this… but it’s rare.

It could be theoretically as powerful as a ps5 but not nearly as performant. Game studios are not spending any time optimising for apple silicon and dumping tons of dev hours to make sure it runs smooth on the console. Sony uses its custom graphics API (GNM and GNMX) and custom shader language and x86 platform. Xbox uses DirectX. Apple went in on its own route with Metal. That widens the gap.

Game studios release games for the iPhone. Which means they do spend time optimizing for Apple Silicon and dump tons of dev hours to make sure things run smoothly.

Good point. But I still think that would be completely different games and teams doing both for most games.

I can think of very few examples of games being cross ported on all platforms like Fortnite or Genshin Impact.

To the point of the ps5 comparison we're talking very different games people are thinking of. Maybe Apple needs to go the usual route of buying a studio and releasing games but I don't think apple likes or respect gaming enough to do that with good results.

I have a ~7 year old 27" iMac. It wasn't that expensive at the time and the screen is still way better than a lot of what is on the market today. Now, it is only available in a 24" version. Is time moving backward?

Have you seen in person the new iMac? The performance leap from that is insane. The 4,5K retina screen also fits as much even if not more than your 27-inch

I don't understand why they didn't just keep the 27" screen. It isn't like 27" is considered large by today's standards.

Considering that Apple has been significantly more innovative (tech wise) than pretty all of their competitors I’m not quite sure what this tells about them.

marketing

Maximizing margins for the M3 Pro which makes up a large majority of MBP sales. The transistor count reduction adds up over thousands of 3nm wafers. They are probably getting twice as many M3 Pro chips per wafer over M2 Pro. Nudging power users to the M3 Max doesn't hurt either. Personally, I don't mind trading 2 P-cores for 2 E-cores but the memory nerf annoys me, and I suspect the cache has been nerfed as well.

I mind it to the point where I cancelled my order (upgrading from an M1 Pro). I'd do the mid-range Max but I imagine the battery life would suffer too much on the 14". It's been pointed that that marketing for the M3 Pro is the same as it was for the M2 Pro earlier this year - up to 20% faster compute than the M1 Pro. As is the wireless web battery life. Sure this will be variable based on the workload, but on averag…

Don't blame you on the battery life, we'll have to see if the tiny M3 Pro has brings efficiency benefits without a reduction in real-world performance.

I'm fond of the E-cores and my main gripe with my M1 Max is the 2 E-cores being constantly pegged and 2 P-cores always active to compensate, which likely means the first P-core cluster can't sleep. It would be fun to see how 6 E-cores would handle daily tasks but I'm not spending $3k to find out. Only paid 2k for a used full-size M1 Max a over a year ago so I'll likely skip this gen. I get ~6-8 hours of constant use btw.

After seeing the benchmarks I ended up getting a 16" unbinned Max... previously had a 16" M1 Pro as a work machine and think I can be fine dealing with the bulk as my one and only even though I'm regularly on the move.

I don't think the e-cores were an actual engineering decision, but a way to reduce transistor count to improve yields without reducing performance.

Agreed about 2 being too few. I see the 2 on my M1 Pro regularly pegged as well, but I imagine a 1/4 ratio to be ideal.

I have a 16" M1 Pro for work and it's heavy. Wish I had requested the 14" in hindsight.
