When you spend a lot of time telling people how dangerous your products are, people who have the power to keep dangerous products off the market might listen. Especially if those people aren't presently very bright, and are already mad at you for not helping them achieve their unrelated authoritarian goals. Yeah. Our stuff is waaaaay toooooo dangerous! The model is soooo powerful that I have to write a long essay telling government to change the economic policies, to regulate hard, and to ban this and that. Well, now the government is indeed regulating for a claim that Dario has been warning about. This is exactly getting what he bargained for?

There are thousands of comments here, so I apologize if this is just a repeat of what others already have stated. However. I want to say that this move by the US Gov will have a profound impact on how Europe will be dealing with US based companies in the future - including Anthropic, OpenAI and Google. I am totally convinced, as a European that this will prove over time to be a turning point in the history of European relationship with the US, and US' long term soft power and position. Of all the stupidity the US gov. has done, this is one of the dumbest move they've done. It will hurt the relations between Europe and The US, it will hurt the economy and it will hurt progress. The world will not be the same after this.

"This is also why Anthropic has required 30-day retention of customer data with Fable-a policy change that carries real costs for us with customers, but that allows us to research and mitigate jailbreaks."

What if US government demands the retained data, or another party requests it through legal process

Sure. Keep peddling that was the position of Anthropic. Even though they called for global, coronated regulation, as opposed to the handicapping of them while letting others run free.

Finally they will pay for all the scaremongering they been doing to sell their models as something so much ahead of all else. Now they finally found the right fools in audience to believe it.

You:

"We should improve society somewhat" "And yet you participate in society! Curious. I am very intelligent"[1]

So many comments here missing the big picture, and just gleefully pointing out that Anthropic got what they deserved, or that this is the natural culmination of some kind of marketing stunt. The real story here is that this may be the beginning of governments restricting the availability of strong LLMs to the public, to you. Fable was the strongest model on the market, and the US government has told you you can't use…

Yes. We will likely have a heavily policed narrow line to some kind of AI during the phase when we as employees will still have value in this centaur configuration, so we'll be allowed to steer the largely autonomous models for our employers, direct them a bit when they do something wrong, if we can convince the guard-AI. All this will be logged and constantly audited by your employer and by the government and the AI companies.

For hobby use, only simple models will be allowed. The models of the future will be so large that the huge data centers being built right now will be necessary for training them. Open sourcing will be a strategic nation state level decision. Regular people won't have it. We will have toys, we will have infinite AI generated entertainment and the rest isn't exactly planned out I guess.

For large corporates and other entities of any size, the threat of the core of your infrastructure getting suddenly disabled because of something like this is going to be untenable. I predict the pressures for on-prem, offline access (whether by licensing weights or getting them in a restricted setting like TEE/CC) will be overwhelming and one the players will fill the need.

The eternal mainframe wheel keeps spinning.

So isn’t the only logical conclusion that we have reached the max of model capabilities that the US allows to be made available to the public? Why invest in smarter models with this precedent? And potentially more importantly: if a model like Mythos, which at best is an incremental improvement over Opus, is getting this treatment, how are all the AI investments that are based on the expectation of ASI / AGI / signifi…

It’s the Trump administration trying to pick winners and losers. The chief ai person in the administration is David Sacks. He’s been completely biased and is always going on rants against Anthropic on his podcast (wild that he is participating while in the administration). It’s clear the administration is at odds with Anthropic and will do what they can to stop them from succeeding.
