Yet another iPhone design that offers no real value to consumers. Apple design has gone off the rails.
I've been running an iPhone 4S, yes, the 2011 iPhone version, precisely for this reason.
I don't care about thinner, so I didn't jump on the 5,6,7,8.
I want a user replaceable battery.
I want a drop-it-in-the-pool waterproof design.
I could not care less about display pixel count. In six years I have never looked at my 4S and said "Wow, this thing needs more pixels".
Along the same lines, I never said "I wish the display wrapped around the edges". Talk about a non-value feature.
Home button? I can find it without having to look at the display. These phones need more buttons, not less.
I want the camera to be in the damn middle of the phone, not the edges which forces you to grab it in really weird and uncomfortable ways. And add a dedicated camera shutter button!
I want a designed-from-the-factory solution to multiple lenses on the camera.
Now the TSA can just point the phone at my face to unlock it. Thanks for actually reducing the security of my device. No thank you.
I want a device I can hand to my kids, a friend or colleague and not have to be concerned with any of them accessing apps and data they shouldn't. A programmable "Private Mode" button on the side, like the mute button would be a fantastic way to do this without having to navigate menus on the touch screen. Press and hold (or something like that) and it presents you with your programmed mode (Kid, Friend, Stranger) on the screen, tap, done. Password required to get out of this mode. Press and hold private mode button, enter password, done.
I want a device with a real fucking USB port that I can connect to any computer and fully interact with it. That means transfer files back and forth, copy-and-past bidirectionally, fully remote control with the mouse and type with my computer keyboard. I want a device that becomes an extension of my computer. It should feel as natural as possible without adding cognitive load to the interaction.
I want a device with an open non-sandboxed interface (USB or RS-232) that can become a controller for other devices. I should not have to buy custom chips from Apple to use it. I want to be able to plug it into a bunch of things and use the phone as a terminal or controller.
I want to be able to write my own software without having to seek approval from an overlord. It's OK if this software is sandboxed. Let people decide, as the phone users, what privileges and access they wish to grant uncured software.
I want a damn standard audio interface. Yes, that means a headphone jack.
There's more but I'll stop there. iPhone X, as far as I am concerned, is a result of mental masturbation on the part of the designers rather than a true attempt to add value for end users. Not going there unless I absolutely must. And given that I no-longer develop iPhone apps it looks like I can skip this model as well. Let's see how long the 4S lasts. So far, so good.
