The leaving part is not the issue, as you try to immigrate into a country you're subject to the rules that country sets. You're always free to not immigrate into that country (this is not about asylum). The issue here is that, if you just left the country to do everything the country asked you, you are now in limbo. For how long? No one can tell. Does this mean you lose your job? Maybe. And when you decide it's no lo…

when you treat immigrants like they were not people with lifes, you are just one step away from treating poor people as they were not people and then too treat all common people as they were not people. also it has been quite convenient explanation for adopting systems such as Flock and allowing all kinds of para-police actions which seems very similar to what happened in germany circla 1930-1934

H1B is explicitly a dual intent visa. You are allowed to pursue a green card while in the country on an H1B. It has been an accepted, valid path for a very long time now. If the government wishes to change that of course they can. But the humane approach would be to let those who have already started the process finish it.

You are allowed to pursue one, but the government is allowed to say no. Hence the need for a backup plan

I don't really think anyone is disputing that the government is able to change their approach to immigration (though it's telling they're doing it by just freezing appointments rather than passing a law), but that you can make changes to immigration law in a way that respects immigrants as human beings. The government is just choosing not to.

Responding to "it's cruel" with "they're allowed to do it" is kind of sidestepping the core of the complaint.

Conflating not wanting to compete with foreigners for jobs in your own country with racism is bad faith bullshit. Foreigners of the exact same race are equally unwanted competition.

They say it out loud . The people writing these policies are vocally proud of being white nationalists . Defending them with "well maybe they have a good reason!" is evidence that you're either on board with their actual agenda (i.e., evil) or incomprehensibly naive (i.e., stupid).

There's nothing wrong with being White nationalist. I dont want my country to become India, Africa, China or the Middle East.

> Your claim could be shortened to: > > The ultimate uncertainty is that regardless of who you are and what you do, a country always has the right to kick you out...Nothing is guaranteed ultimately. Depends on whether you think international law still exists and is followed - statelessness isn't allowed under that.

There's no single set of "international law" in the sense of national laws, state laws or local laws. There are only agreements and treaties between nations that are applied within those nations. As such, what "international law" applies depends on which nation you're in or from or if some nation's law enforcement have jurisdictional reach. More to the point, nothing about this decision implies statelessness. Every v…

I work in a global company. As an interviewer, I don't even know if the person I interview is a US citizen. I don't even know if they live in the US or another country, and I'm probably not allowed to ask. I just rate their performance. And everybody is paid the same. I think the situation is quite simple. Companies want the best candidates they can get, and the larger the recruitment pool, the better. If tomorrow yo…

> Companies want the best candidates they can get, and the larger the recruitment pool, the better. Yes, at the lowest wages they can get. Increase supply -> lower prices (wages) -> more corporate profits! However, there are those who believe that corporate profits are not the highest good. Some of us also care about the earnings of American workers. Also, "best candidates" alone does not "best company" make. You nee…

I don't understand this.

At least in tech megacorps, immigrants get paid the same as americans. They're also very good, and if they were to hire only americans, their talent pool would be worse. They're not 'cashing in' on cheaper labor.

It is only a matter of time before this administration does this to green card applications and renewals too. A permanent green card is not permanent. It needs to be renewed every 10 years. I am also worried about policies eventually directed at naturalized citizens. I sincerely hope I am wrong.

This is incorrect. The physical card itself expires every 10 years, but your status as a permanent resident doesn't. That can only be revoked by a legal process.

Obviously if you do not renew the green card itself, you are going to face practical issues, because you have no easy way to prove your permanent resident status. So things like employment verification because of new employment and entering the country from abroad will become quite a bit more difficult.

Your first sentence is factually wrong. I highly recommend that you refrain from commenting on any immigration related topics until you can get your facts correct.

https://www.uscis.gov/working-in-the-united-states/h-1b-spec... > This nonimmigrant classification https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/immigration/h1b > The H-1B program applies to employers seeking to hire nonimmigrant aliens

This is a nonsense debate, really. The H1B is a non-immigrant visa but it's also dual intent so it allows you to pursue immigrant status.

https://global.temple.edu/isss/faculty-staff-and-researchers...

> The doctrine of H-1B dual intent has the following legal bases:

> Unlike many nonimmigrant categories, I.N.A. § 101(a)(15)(H)(i) contains no requirement of proving there is a "residence in a foreign country which he has no intention of abandoning;"

> The H category is specifically excluded from the I.N.A. § 214(b)'s presumption of immigrant intent;

You say:

> You're not supposed to rely on it to build a life in the US with no backup plan

when in fact the visa very specifically allows it (as per the "no intention of abandoning"). People arriving in the US on an H1B visa with immigrant intent are absolutely following the law. Is it a good idea? Much more debatable. But they're not acting without precedent nor without specific legal text allowing it.

Genuine question for any american fellows: Is this a real problem ? Is this a really a priority problem in your pov ? If if is why ? In my country, we do have a policy of integrating people quite early on if they come from a fragile situation and for other people if they have jobs and can sustain themselves it is a bonus as they contribute with taxes and will have basically no benefits like retirement. I am not makin…

the Trump administration is ham fisted, performative, and ineffective in almost everything it does. but i agree with stopping and reversing the rapid demographic change in our country. even law abiding ones. i want to live in my culture and my country, not an international airport.

> almost all US economists Bold claim without artifacts: no artifacts to your claim. > Hacker news crowd can easily verify this by spot-checking. Nobody got time for this. You provide the verification for us or else your claim just doesn't mean jack. You try to sound smart by saying words like `false narratives` or `divisive exploits` but they don't mean anything here. You just trying to sound smart.

Artifact ? What do you mean? I stated where I found this claim. > Deaths of Despair and the Future of Capitalism by Anne Case, and Angus Deaton. And all the references it has.

the point is that almost nobody will read the book just to verify an internet comment. If you can provide some resources cited in the book it would be better... but this reasoning can be applied to 99% of comments here. At least you provided a book.
