This is going on all over again.

Agentic AI really is changing things. I've had a complete change of heart about it. It's good enough now to boost productivity MASSIVELY for devs.

I think this is one of those things that can be situationally useful, but also come with huge risks to the majority of users.

https://github.com/lawless-m You can see by Contributors which ones Claude has done. I have no idea if the code is any good, I’ve never looked at it and I have no idea how to code in Rust or Racket or Erlang anyway.

> I have no idea if the code is any good, I’ve never looked at it and I have no idea how to code in Rust or Racket or Erlang anyway. In that case, are you really producing multiple projects per week? If you've never looked at the code, have you verified that they work?

yes, I am using my voice agent, my head tracker, my sql writer, my odbc client, my shopping list, my sharepoint file uploader, my Timberborn map generator, my wireguard routing, my oxygen not included launch scripts, my i3wm config, my rust ATA over Ethernet with Content Addressable storage

the list could go on

Weird, because I've created a webcam app that does segmentation so they can delete the background and put a new background in I mean, I suppose that's not groundbreaking. But it's not just reading and writing to a database. I've just added a ATA over Ethernet server in Rust, I thought of doing it in the car on the way home and an hour later I've got a working version. I type this comment using a voice to text system…

> I make stuff every day I just wouldn't bother to make if I had to do it myself > I'm not going to spend weeks trying to find out how it works. Then what is the point? For some of us, programming is an art form. Creativity is an art form and an ideal to strive towards. Why have a machine to create something we wouldn’t care about? The only result is a devaluation to zero of actual effort and passion, whose only bene…

Your assessment of Claude simply isn’t true. Or Stackoverflow is really good. I’m producing multiple projects per week that are weeks of work each.

I produce a lot of shit every week too, but I don’t brag about my digestive system on “Hacker” “News.”

You are so bitter. Take a moment to ponder why you are that way.

Nice deflection. Did you use ChatGPT to come up with it?

That's not what the specialists who have to deal with this slop say. There have been articles about this discussed here already.

What would you have us do, Keep the fixes to ourselves?

Yes, keep AI slop “fixes” to yourself and only create PRs for your own work.

Why wouldn't you count things initially made by individual contributors at Google?

Because they're not a good measure of the company's ability to develop products based on the direction from leadership.

Leadership's direction at the time was to use 20% of your time in unstructured exploration and cool ideas like that, though good point of the other poster that that is no longer a policy.

"It is 1958. IBM passes up the chance to buy a young, fledgling company that has invented a new technology called xerography. Two years later, Xerox is born, and IBM has been kicking themselves ever since. It is ten years later, the late '60s. Digital Equipment DEC and others invent the minicomputer. IBM dismisses the minicomputer as too small to do serious computing and, therefore, unimportant to their business. DEC…

IBM invented/developed/introduced magnetic stripe cards, UPC Barcodes, the modern ATM, Hard drives, floppies, DRAM, SQL, the 360 Family of Mainframes, the PC, Apollo guidance computers, Deep Blue. IBM created a far share of the future we're living in. I'm no fan of much of what IBM is doing at the moment but it could be argued that its consultancy/…

Nitpicking, IBM did non develop _the_ Apollo Guidance Computer (the one in the spacecraft with people), it was Raytheon. They did, however, developed the Launch Vehicle Digital Computer that controlled the Saturn rocket in Apollo missions. AGC had very innovative design, while LVDC was more conventional for that time.

You have anything to review regarding this? > as soon as GPT-3 came out. I don't think that was true at all. It was impressive when it came out, but people in the field clearly saw the limitations and what it is. RL isn't magical…

AlphaGo Zero doesn't need much human intervention at all. Regarding world models: All the big ones. LeCun, Demis Hassabis, Fei-Fei Li too. And they are all working on it. LLMs will definitly play some type of role in AGI. After all you can ask an LLM already a lot of basic things like 'what are common tasks to make a tea'. A type of guide, long term fact memory or whatever this can be called.

> AlphaGo Zero doesn't need much human intervention at all

You should research it and not just read news articles. RL did not work and required human intervention numerous times before it got close to what it is now.

> So IBM hasn't been doing hardware R&D for about three decades Even a 5 second google search says you are wrong. https://research.ibm.com/semiconductors/ai-hardware-center https://research.ibm.com/topics/quantum-hardware

Having a research department is very different from whether they are actually accomplishing anything and whether or not it is a meaningful revenue stream. On all fronts this is just not true. The quantum stuff so far in the industry is vapor ware and its unclear wether IBM is really making forward progress vs yearly pronouncements of progress to keep the funding stream open

You said they hadn’t one. Google search said you were wrong.

You don’t get to change the goalposts.
