This is obviously a quickly produced paper to get the finding out but.... I find there to be so much missing and so many things poorly worded or posed about their process that would have taken zero time to expound upon, it's infuriating. "All the reactions are carried out under 10^-2 Pa" OK, I know they mean 10^-2 of vacuum. But why not say that? "10^-2 Pa" isn't enough. Was this a full vacuum oven? Done in sealed qu…

What personal benefit does this gain someone to publish it so quickly? Is it just social media attention?

From what I understand it was discovered in 1999, hence LK99. Doesn't seem very quick to me in that case.

There is a tendency to call any scientific work that came out of anywhere in the former USSR as "Russian". Talking about fusion, isn’t the major part of the Tokamak plant in Cadarache in France, dedicated to cooling down the superconductors to zero temperatures? If we make a leap in room-temperature superconductors, do we also make a leap in fusion?

It would help with one (out of many) problems in that field, sure. Though it would likely depend quite a bit on the nature of the superconductors we're able to produce.

That's right. The standard way to measure resistance without being sensitive to contact resistance is called the four-terminal method, see ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four-terminal_sensing ). You drive a current using two outer wires, but then detect the voltage across the sample using a different pair of wires. You'll measure zero voltage if it's superconducting, since V=IR. Why isn't 10^-2 Pa enough? Clearly they mean absolute pressure. What would 10^-2 of vacuum mean?

Why are folks trying to prove that this material is a superconductor in roundabout ways, like levitation, dimagnetism, etc? What is the reason they don't just test to see if electrical current flows without resistance? Surely there is something I am missing here.

With the current fabrication process, they're only getting a chunk with LK-99 particles sprinkled in. Since nobody yet knows how to fabricate a pure chunk of LK-99, it'll be hard to measure the true resistance of LK-99.

Maybe a dumb question, but could you grind them up and separate out the superconducty bits with a magnet or would that destroy the effect?

As a non-Chinese scientist, I can attest that there is intense pressure to publish as many papers as possible pretty much everywhere , and this leads to a problem of bad research across the world. To be fair, according to TFA the death penalty is only for clinical trials where the drug or procedure, due to faked or doctored data, causes severe or fatal consequences.

It actually seems pretty reasonable to me. You develop a drug that actually kills people but fake your data to show it saves lives. Then you make money while people start dying, essentially killing people because your career was more important than reality. I’d call that murder.
