That's likely a firmware bug in the monitor. It probably reports some ridiculously small resolution during its boot process and macOS queries it that time and rearranges the windows accordingly. macOS could implement workarounds of course, but probably it just follows the process whatever the display id protocol prescribes...

MacOS cannot drive one 5120x1440 display using Intel display hardware. It will happily drive two displays at 2560x1440. The monitor had multiple inputs so by putting it in PBP mode I was able to drive one input as USB-C and another as HDMI through a dock converter. This means the wakeup was not in sync. So my 2018 MacBook Air can drive the Apple LG 5K display (lid closed) at 5120 x 2880 at 60Hz.

I agree with you on the just works thing. I have the same keyboard, trackball, monitor, tbolt dock and external HD on my desk at home and work.

I was talking about the butterfly keyboards. I don't see anything in the comment I replied to that really lines up with what you're saying.

FWIW, my main monitor is a 43" 4k display, and it works perfectly fine on AwesomeWM - but I' don't use any scaling, the 4k is purely for more screen real estate - literally like having 4 perfectly aligned borderless 24" monitors. I can fit 10 full A4 pages of text simultaneously.

In the same boat here. I use a $400 49 inch curved 4k TV as my monitor along with i3wm and while I waste a lot of the space on screen to perpetually open apps I don't touch, having the ability to look at my todo list or every app I need for a project at the same time has its benefits. I just wish I could lower the height and tilt the TV upwards a bit so I'm not breaking my neck looking at the upper windows.

I'm not sure how, but GTK3 applications violate the layers and are not affected by the nVidia setting. I think it's because nVidia sets a fake Xorg resolution (e.g. twice your actual) but GTK3 sees through that and uses its own internal dpi setting. I also presume this would be the case regardless of whether Gnome 3 is your DE/WM or not.

That's an interesting idea. I should look into that when I eventually upgrade. A stubborn part of me left the monitors in landscape because I occasionally play games, but I end up never doing that on my desktop. I find it easier to look up and down than side to side. Too many ski and skateboard crashes with whiplash when younger.

You might be right, though if so that would also imply they thought it was great before it was fixed, and I still disagree with that.

32” 4K is perfection, right in the sweet spot of size.

The cost of buying a new high end laptop is trivial in relation to your work value.

I used to run a dev group of 40 people. Every developer got fastest possible pc with big screen monitor back when both were expensive, and their own office with a door. Added about 1% to the cost of each developer, but the benefit to productivity was at least 10-20 times that.

And Not even counting benefits of reduced turnover.

I find your opinion very subjective. In my experience, I remember that in 2013-2014 when i switched from MBA to retina MBP i experienced the wow effect. But recently MBP fall off and screen got broken. Now using 720p 20” monitor and have not noticed significant difference. Mostly programming, as in reading and writing text, be it in text editor or shell. It is as good as before. Less screen estate, right, it does not affect my workflow much.
