[flagged]

> India and China’s contribution to CO2 emissions dwarfs the rest of the world Such brazen, bald-faced lies. How do you sleep at night? https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/cumulative-co2-emissions-...

do you know how to read that graph? because this graph you linked exactly shows what you call "lies" is true.

US is the largest historical emitter… responsible for something like 25% of all man made CO2 emissions

The entire west world contributes 28.8%. US is about 11%. [1] [1] https://www.iea.org/reports/global-energy-review-2025/co2-em...

That’s a different question. The person you’re replying to was referring to historical totals and they were right:

https://ourworldindata.org/contributed-most-global-co2

> the United States has emitted more CO2 than any other country to date: at around 400 billion tonnes since 1751, it is responsible for 25% of historical emissions; this is twice more than China – the world’s second-largest national contributor

You can split up every single industries/topics/&c. into "yeah but it only use 1.5% of energy", "yeah but it only produces 1.5% of the co2" Guess what happens when you add them up...

This kind of logic only works if the percentages for each industry are all equally that small, so you can treat them as all equally bad, but they are absolutely not.

They're all that small if you split them as OP did. Just look at "transportation", it's like 25% of co2 emitted globally, but once you break it down:

Aviation is 2.5%: https://ourworldindata.org/global-aviation-emissions

Shipping industry is 3%: https://www.transportenvironment.org/topics/ships

Large truck freight is 3%: https://www.statista.com/statistics/1414750/carbon-dioxide-e...

Medium truck freight is 1%

The single biggest non divisible sector you can realistically come up with is "personal transportation", but even that is only 10% of global co2. You can look at other sectors like "industry" and "energy" and I can guarantee you will be able to easily split things down into sub categories which have <5% impact on global co2 emissions.

Because they are practicing the reverse scientific method. They hold a conclusion in their hand, like, man-made climate change is a hoax , and seek to find any threads of "evidence" that support their foregone conclusion.

The scientific method is making testable predictions. You can look back 10, 20, 30, 40 years at the predictions of sea level rise made by climate scientists, and the sea level today is nowhere near where they predicted it would rise to. If someone's continuously making incorrect predictions it's not reasonable to assume their predictions will suddenly become accurate, especially when there's no feedback loop to weed…

It's much harder to predict exactly than to dismiss anything slightly off.

But the tendency is showing: in my country, we're getting records in extreme temperatures, forrest fires and storms.

But a study 1% can be dismissed, some random in a basement 99% off can be believed. This just says: many people are just looking for a confirmation of their beliefs, not evidence. And many companies play this game (supporting the right politicians, spreading disinformation aka lies, etc), because there are billions at stake.

I think we're well past the point of no return. In my part of the world, this year's weather has been ---- weird. Global warming doesn't mean warming per se - but it does mean unpredictability.

More extreme weather events are a consequence I've seen mentioned before, as the main thing to expect besides a slightly higher average temperature. Is that what you mean by unpredictable?

And don't fly

COVID proved that not flying barely made a dent in the global emissions. Sure, if we never fly again and reverted to living like a medieval peasant, maybe things will kinda work out.

What nonsense. I certainly feel like a medieval peasant sitting in a high speed train crossing a large country while I read a book for a few hours, costing three hours of work at the median salary if you book your ticket far enough ahead. (They also allegedly run on wind energy, but of course that's creative accounting and another industry is simply attributed the corresponding amount of coal/gas electricity.) Traveling is accessible, fast, and comfortable. The main expense is the hotel(s)

It's a culture thing, nobody on the right would ever be convinced by science, they will shop around until they find what they need to hear. My sister in law sent me a video and told me that she thought it was a really good explainer and had a lot of good facts and figures to support it. To humor her, I took a brief glance at it, and saw that it was produced by Dr. Shiva. I was thinking "no way, it can't be that Shiva…

Because "the left" would be willing to listen to scientific arguments attacking their pet issues, right? It's really not a left/right thing.

What is a left wing equivalent?

The main driver of this is human-produced CO2, and there are meaningful ways to reduce usage. -Switch to an electric vehicle -Migrate from gas appliances (range, furnace, water heater) to electric (induction, heat pumps) -If your power grid isn’t clean, add rooftop or balcony solar -Encourage friends and family to do the same

Prices are a great incentive. In Germany, 1 kWh of electricity costs roughly 3x as much as 1 kWh of gas. That doesn't make heat pumps very attractive. Historically the differences were even worse. Relying on people individually making choices that are better for the environment at a disadvantage for themselves is not going to work.

germany is an excellent example of an industrial powerhouse imploding their country by adopting the stupidest power strategy possible. Just utterly incomprehensible.

If the US refuses to participate in the energy revolution, then it'll be a Russia-tier power within a generation.

Empirically, Europe's embrace of the "energy revolution" has done far more to bring it closer to Russia, making energy 2-3x more expensive and gradually destroying Germany's industrial base. So much so that it can't even produce as many munitions as Russia, in spite of a GDP around ten times larger.

Considering that for electricity production gas is imported, but this amount is stable over decades in Germany and a small fraction of overall gas use, and not imported from Russia anymore, I would say this is nonsense. Did the US stop importing from Rosatom btw?
