I was discussing this with a friend today. It just feels like there's no point to these actions. Not in the sense of "I don't ideologically agree with our decision to do this," but in the sense of, "I do not see how this accomplishes any ideological or practical goal." What are they trying for? Regime change in Iran? No more Iranian nuclear program? There barely was one before. Keeping Israel safe? It's been an open…

They are boxing in China. Taking away China’s oil. First Venezuela. Now Iran. Decoupling from China while taking out China’s allies is the overarching foreign policy.

I'm not sure how much that will pay off - it also gives China legitimacy in starting to much more overtly pursue their own interests through force. I definitely wouldn't be surprised if we saw something happening very quickly.

What are the chances that HN is getting astroturfed these days? Are mods strict about it? I lots of relatively new accounts coming with what seems to me extreme, but altogether pop-culture acceptable opinions

I used to report quite a number of political/ideological-only accounts to mods through email. They're explicitly against the single purpose account rule. They usually got banned or at least warned.

Over the past year or two I reported a number of accounts that are basically pro-Israel-only, they post a ton of comments to any Israel-related thread and either nothing else or very little of anything else. Mods refuse to ban or even warn them, apparently because emotions run high, there are too many of them and there's priority in punishing the most egregious content so relatively mild ones get a pass, and if mods are being accused of being-antisemitic and they ban a bunch of these they would reinforce the image, etc. These are from memory and not exact quotes.

I don't buy it, and I've stopped reporting things to mods. (To be abundantly clear, anti-Israel-only accounts should 100% be banned too, but at least I haven't noticed as many as them. Any other kind of politics-only account should be purged too if the rules are to be believed.)

I recall someone (name escapes me at the moment) defining WW3 as ignition in 5 flashpoints between belligerent groupings: - Eastern Africa esp. Sudan, which we all nearly universally ignore - Israel Iran - Russia and a neighbor which we know today is Ukraine - Pakistan Afghanistan India - China Taiwan Plus Plus Attributes that distinguish WW3 from previous world wars were IIRC: Contained conflagration, short targeted…

Epstein files have more potent power in them than any nuclear arsenal. No way this many rich powerful people would go down without destroying at least half of the world.

It seems the admin would rather you focus on DoW or DOW. Any mention of Epstein is getting downvoted.

Ok. So we have just taken out all of Israel's foes with force. They are safe now right? We can stop supporting them militarily in every way now right? They no longer need any weapons, intelligence support, defense support, etc, right? If this is the right path to their long term safety then this must be true.

America / Israel's partnership goes a lot deeper, it started in the cold war, and it's quite interesting. It heightened significantly after 9/11, where Israel spied (and still does) on all of America's enemies to prevent another 9/11, doing a lot of dirty work, giving intel as part of a partnership. I can't imagine both countries ever wanting to get rid of that partnership. This part of the equation is often left out in the conversation, presumably because it's hush hush ultimately.

Many people might wonder why China doesn't step in to help Iran. From our perspective, we realized a long time ago that the Iranian government is too weak and fundamentally untrustworthy. They would sell out China's interests to curry favor with the United States, so China's cooperation with Iran is kept as free from political entanglements as possible. War is wrong, but at most China will sell some weapons—it won't get too involved."

> Iranian media now report 40 killed and 48 students injured following the strike on a girls’ elementary school in Minab, as rescue and recovery efforts continue. Congrats America!

Update: AP news reports that deaths at girls school has now risen to 148.

Well hopefully this is short, minimally lethal, and leads to regime change for all those involved.

> minimally lethal

The US and Israel are involved. The only way it’s going to turn out is maximally lethal to all those not involved at all.

See… basically any military operation participated in by those nations in recent history.

We got a couple strikes and already managed to hit an elementary school. Nothing I’ve seen in Gaza or Iraq leads me to believe this will be any different.

After 5000 years of human organised war history we are here:

* the weapons can annihilate the world and extinguish civilization in a few hours

* a massive asymmetry between the enemies in any metric is evident

* the strikes and battles are surprisingly of small scale, targeted and not decisive

Why on earth isn't the diplomacy used to solve the status after an imminent warning to make Iran an extension of Indian ocean with weapons of mass destruction?
