They aren't really available here as refurbished. I think they've sold very few, and even the M1 is pretty overpowered for most people, so there has been little replacement done I think.

Heck I still use my M1 Air for everything, it's fine.

I'd love to see a regulator mandate that computers like the iMac that have built in screens must have HDMI ports that allow them to be used as monitors. This would be great for the consumer and prevent a lot of ewaste as people can use obsolete computers as monitors well past their useful lifespan as a monitor.

HDMI is really not a very good choice as they try to block open source implementations: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/02/hdmi-forum-to-amd-no...

It should be kept out of regulations.

Ya, I've had my eye on it for a little while. It's significantly out of my price range though and the webcam would be a tough one to accept. To be honest I don't really notice it much. It just kind of blends in to the speaker bar along the top. What I do notice is the sound of the physical shutter opening if I open something which uses the camera (50/50 chance it's going to be FaceTime deliberately or PhotoBooth by accident) but visually I really don't notice it now.

Yep, I remember years ago my first experience with a Dell monitor (around the time of the PPC/Intel transition) at work, and being quite impressed with the build quality and the stand in particular, a quality that remains to this day (at least on the HiDPI models like the P2415Q and this U3224KB; maybe the cheaper models are less sturdy? I don't know honestly)

Like you I was skeptical about the webcam initially (I think I've used it about 3 or 4 times in the 15 months I've had it) and would have probably bought a model without it if they offered that.

It's nice to finally see more HiDPI options available (BenQ recently announced a new 27" 5K I believe), I just hope this isn't a recurring pattern with manufacturers, where they introduce it and then decide it's not worth it and drop it without a replacement, like the aforementioned P2415Q, the UP2715K, etc.

Are you familiar with the concept of "pricing ladders"? The point of the entry level product is not to simply be "the economy model", it's to be feature deficient in just the right way to make you take a "step up" the ladder to the next model. What I've observed is that Apple does this by targeting the base model with a storage option that's just below what's probably the sweet spot for price / usefulness in the curr…

They do this trick with RAM/disk configs for all their product lines. This basically means that any useful config is relatively expensive, and I would never recommend their entry-level models to anyone.

You just made me nostalgic for the intel MBP days when you could swap the factory HDD and optical drive for two SSDs

I still use one of these for media viewing on my TV, great machines as you could upgrade disks to 2TB and memory to 32 GB. This is for machines that are 12 years old! And Apple is still selling new machines with ridiculously lower specs.

This argument doesn't make any sense - those lists don't shy away from including other higher priced options.

Said Dell display is $2,479.99 before any discount.

The XDR is included on every one of those lists, with the same resolution/size, but $4999 (more than double the price) without a stand of any kind.

The Apple Studio display is $1999 (just $500 cheaper) if you want the height adjustable stand.
