For anyone confused, this person’s statement about the EU is total bs.

It's what I was taught: you switch on your indicators when you have checked that you are clear to merge and you have effectively committed. I always assume that someone who has put their indicators in is going to move according to them, whether it's clear or not.

I don't doubt that it's the way you have been taught, but it doesn't make any sense. The whole point of blinkers/indicator lights in cars are to signal your intentions before you do them: if you're going to signal at the same time that you do the action you're signalling, you might as well not bother.

Not Tesla exactly, but Musk has gone all-in trying to get a man elected to be US President who consistently says climate change is a hoax, or words to that effect.

US oil production under the current administration is at 13.5M barrels per day. The highest ever. The US is shitting the bed on the energy transition. Meanwhile global solar cell production is slated to hit 2TW/year by the end of 2025 @ under 10cents/watt. China, the land of coal, is on track to hit net zero before the US. Both parties and all levels of government have a disgraceful record on climate change. PS: For…

Both parties have a disgraceful record on climate change, but the GOP is still clearly much worse. High as US oil production is, Republicans complain that it should be higher. And Trump making the hoax claim dogma for his followers is incredibly damaging.

"Driver is mostly disengaged, but then must intervene in a sudden fail state" is also one of the most dangerous types of automation due to how long it takes the driver to reach full control as well.

Yeah, I don't drive but I would think it would be worse than actually paying attention all the time

He’s not doing anything activists haven’t done for years to get out the vote. In college famous rock and hip hop groups would come on campus to play shows that had voter registration tables upon entry and lots of messaging about who to vote for and then being endlessly recruited to volunteer/phone bank/canvas for some group that was supporting the event. Activism cuts both ways.

Direct payments do seem to be illegal in a way that having a rally or concert or canvassing are not. https://electionlawblog.org/?p=146397

What a laugh, would you take that deal? Upside: you get paid a 200k salary, if all your code works perfectly. Downside: if it doesn't, you go to prison. The users aren't compelled to use it. They can choose not to. They get to choose their own risks. The internet is a gold mine of creatively moronic opinions.

Need far more regulation of the software industry, far too many people working in it fail to understand the scope of what they do. Civil engineer kills someone with a bad building, jail. Surgeon removes the wrong lung, jail. Computer programmer kills someone, “oh well it’s your own fault”.

You made all that up out of nothing. They'd only go to jail if it was intentional.

The only case where a computer programmer "kills someone" is where he hacks into a system and interferes with it in a way that foreseeably leads to someone's death.

Otherwise, the user voluntarily assumed the risk.

Frankly if someone lets a computer drive their car, given their own ample experiences of computers "crashing", it's basically a form of attempted suicide.

i have the same experience 12.5 is insanely good. HN is full of people that dont want self driving to succeed for some reason. fortunately, it's clear as day to some of us that tesla approach will work

> HN is full of people that dont want self driving to succeed for some reason. I would love for self-driving to succeed. I do long-ish car trips several times a year, and it would be wonderful if instead of driving, I could be watching a movie or working on something on my laptop. I've tried Waymo a few times, and it feels like magic, and feels safe. Their record backs up that feeling. After everything I've seen and…

Time will show I'm right and you're wrong.

> I have absolutely zero faith in your anecdote that you didn't touch the steering wheel. I bet it's a lie. I’m not GP, but I can share video showing it driving across residential, city, highway, and even gravel roads all in a single trip without touching the steering wheel a single time over a 90min trip (using 12.5.4.1).

And if someone wants to claim I’m cherry picking the video, happy to shoot a new video with this post visible on an iPad in the seat next to me. Is it autonomous? Hell no. Can it drive in Manhattan? Nope. But can it do >80% of my regular city (suburb outside nyc) and highway driving, yep.

It's so obviously cherry-picking, I have no idea what you are even thinking. To not be cherry-picking would mean that it's actually ready and works fine in all situations, and there's no way Musk would not shout that out from rooftops and sell it yesterday.

Obviously it works some time on some roads, but not all the time on all the roads. A film with it when it works on the road it works is cherry-picking. Look up what the term means.

It’s your car, so ultimately the liability is yours. That’s why you have insurance. If Tesla retains ownership, and just lets you drive it, then they have (more) liability.

> It’s your car, so ultimately the liability is yours No, that's not how it works. The driver and the driver's insurer are on the hook when something bad happens. The owner is not, except when the owner is also the one driving, or if the owner has been negligent with maintenance, and the crash was caused by mechanical failure related to that negligence. If someone else is driving my car and I'm a passenger, and they…

Incorrect. Or at least, it varies by state. I was visiting my mother and borrowed her car, had a minor accident with it. Her insurance paid, not mine.

This is why you are required to have insurance for the cars you own. You may from time to time be driving cars you do not own, and the owners of those cars are required to have insurance for those cars, not you.
