No, this is where programmers rules-lawyer in ways that actual lawyers don't and then get law stuff hilariously wrong. No judge thinks that viewing an HTML page is downloading it, because downloading means saving a copy to your computer, not just looking at it. Even having an internet cache folder doesn't count as downloading. Even copying the file from the internet cache folder to somewhere might not count as downlo…

I think its more than the law doesn’t understand the technology.

It's definitely that programmers don't understand law.

I think Twitter is the best counterargument to this defeatism. I don't personally know anyone that uses the platform any more, and I don't recall needing it for anything for years. From that remove, it's now just the platform for lazy politicians, lazy journalists, and scammers of one form or another. If there's more exclusive information there I'm not aware of, I really don't need it.

Also, for some reason, AI companies like DeepSeek who would rather post news exclusively there than vibecode their own news site.

Do you actually need that news?

Why does Starlink matter in a Conversation about X?

Because they are both part of the SpaceX Company. They are intimately tied together.

Only in financial word games, not technically.

Why wouldn't it be? I know we've all got accustomed to the idea that preventing a billionaire from extorting money gets you in trouble, and it usually does, but it's not illegal.

>Why wouldn't it be? Well, for one, because xcancel was forced to suspend its service. There's legal as in "what the law says", and legal as in "what the judge will order you to do", and the latter sense is not as clear-cut as we'd want it to be.

xcancel wasn't actually forced to suspend its service. It got two increasingly threatening C&Ds, but nothing actually happened to it, and the creator took it offline in an abundance of caution.

Regardless of the legality of the service: I always use xcancel instead of X. I don't have a twitter account and I don't want to sign in. I just occasionally want to read what some people had to say about something. Even this is usually a mistake. It's probably better taken as entertainment. My point is: companies stop making your product suck, and people won't have a reason to try and fix it for you.

These browser extensions still work: For Chrome: https://github.com/tsvb/post-peek For Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/dumpster-fire... For Safari: https://andadinosaur.com/launch-litterbox

Don't you still have to log in to xitter with those?

I have been suspended from Ex-Twitter for months for "inauthentic behavior" despite only ever just using the site normally. I would very much like to have nothing to do with this site anymore, but unfortunately many people and organizations from before Elon took it over still post there and I can't make them all move to another site (and the same site for that matter), so here we are.

Come on, be honest, what did you do?

I was flagged by Facebook to provide a government ID years ago, presumably because I tend to use a VPN and never really provided any personal information. I imagine it doesn't take much on any of the other social media platforms to look too much like an anomaly before it warrants a suspension. The platform has nothing to lose since "personalization" and ad revenue won't be lost; in fact, you wouldn't want your personalization algorithm to be trained on such users.

Make companies give up power? Never going to happen.

You can scrape twitter pretty easily yourself with an account (lots of free code on github) but that's the thing - you need an account which is legally complicated but for your own personal use you can just create a dummy account and you'll never be blocked.

> and you'll never be blocked. Youll be instantyl blocked, because accounts without Biometric login and Phone numbers get flagged and asked for validation after 36 hours.

Well that wouldn't be instantly but either of those can be added with almost no real costs at personal-use scale. Throw away phone number for x.com registration is https://github.com/CloakHQ/CloakBrowser-Manager and mobile IP hotspot. x.com is so heavily botted that your personal 1,000 scrapes per day will not even trigger any alarms.

I hate when companies do this. Instagram is a black box for me. Whenever someone sends me a link the web app is completely nonfunctional; clicking links just reload the page, it constantly tries opening the app, etc The last time I signed up for an Instagram account (2016) it got immediately flagged as a bot account. I think I was supposed to appeal it to have it reinstanted, but why bother if this is how badly they…

I think I'm shadow banned from instagram. I can't even log in without weird stuff happening.
