Sounds like you haven't really used macOS a lot. What is this thing about every app having its own updater? Animations slow? It's like the polar opposite, and I've been using macOS since it was called Mac OS X in 2003. IMHO the biggest asset of the macOS ecosystem is the OS itself - not the HW (which of course helps). But the OS is incredibly good as a desktop Unix.

I used macOS full time for many years, actually. I dealt with this every day. When rebooting I saw a ton of popups, because all of my apps wanted to update themselves and each of them shipped a separate updater.

I use Linux now and I'm much happier. It has weird bugs at times, but is overall both faster and much more polished.

iPad's form factor (ie, not a clamshell) makes coding from train, couch, bed, impractical. I think there are cases you can get that turns them into a clamshell on the other hand.

Apple's keyboard for the ipad does this.

Isn't that the same with Windows? I haven't used Windows as my main OS in a couple years, but all my games were on Steam.

Epic and Blizzard also very popular. And there are other distributors too, like GOG or itch.io, who serve a lot of users. And there are popular titles that come with their own launcher, like Genshin Impact.

I truly miss my old 12" macbook. It was a great "coffee shop on the weekend and relax" type laptop for myself

For what it's worth I bought the Dell U3224KB last year. I don't know why it's never on any of the "recommended" lists for mac-friendly monitors, but it's frankly amazing. It's not super cheap, but it's significantly cheaper than the other 6K 32" display on the market, and has a lot more utility (additional ports including 2.5GbE and a bunch of usb ports front and rear).

Ya, I've had my eye on it for a little while. It's significantly out of my price range though and the webcam would be a tough one to accept. Maybe if they update it I'll then try and get one on severe clearance or used market. I am personally more interested in long-term utility and picture quality than industrial design, so the other 6k screen has never been appealing beyond playing with it in the store, but I think my current screen is the lower limit of what I'd pay quite a handsome sum for. I'm glad you like it though, Dell has always put out great monitors, particularly in 16:10 and IPS, so I'm even more hopeful for other options in the future

Edit: Just realized that the 6k Dell monitor is actually 16:9, and the successors to my screen don't seem to be sold anymore. In the 16:10 category, there's only 24" left :(

A 500GB SSD can be had for <$50 these days, and a 1TB for <$100. Still plenty of profit for Apple, even if they bump up the base storage to 512GB and make 1TB a $200 upgrade...

If only it were possible to plug some external storage into these machines (say M.2 NVMe over Thunderbolt.)

The last display I had break down was a CRT piece of shit I got off my school's auction a quarter century ago.
