Open AI has been pretty dishonest since the pivot to for-profit, but this is a new low. Incredibly scummy behaviour that will not land well with a lot of people in the AI community. I wonder if this is what prompted a lot of people to leave for Anthropic.

No, it was mostly concern that Sam wasn't taking existential risks seriously enough. (He thinks they're possible but not very likely, given the current course we're on.)

I do not trust the motives here. It is hard to find a more textbook example of regulatory capture.

Now, to be fair, Altman may be proposing this to shut more draconian regulations down.

But it smells bad. And I am definitely not the only one holding that opinion.

This should be a public debate process at a minimum.

Now, that out of the way, what happens when others do not require licenses and or choose to build what they want anyway?

The US is not the world.

yeah sorry, that is a statement about leadership and responsibility to make the "tough decisions", like going to war, or deciding who the winners and losers are when deciding a budget that everyone contributed to via taxes. NOT a statement meant to whitewash VC playbooks.

No... it's a line from a terrific movie called The Dark Knight, and it's about the ease with which public perception is manipulated.

The risks are not high. I see this as simply a power play to convince people that OpenAI is better than they actually are. I am not saying they're stupid but I wouldn't consider Sam Altman to be an AI expert by virtue of being OpenAI's CEO.

So the fact that Geoffrey Hinton, Stuart Russell, Dario Amodei, Shane Legg, Demis Hassabis, Paul Christiano, Jürgen Schmidhuber, among many others, think that there's a non-trivial chance of human extinction from AI in the next few decades, should be a reason to actually evaluate the arguments for x-risk, yeah?

Probably not. That was my view of them, but that's probably my not really paying attention. It wouldn't surprise me if there was also some element of them giving a misleading impression, but I don't want to go try and find proof of that.

One thing that I think is very interesting, which is highlighted in this other article https://apnews.com/article/chatgpt-openai-ceo-sam-altman-con... , is that Mr. Altman warns that we are on the verge of very troubling A.I. Escape scenarios. He specifically said that there should be a ban on A.I. that can "self-replicate and self-exfiltrate into the wild". The fact that he thinks that such a thing could happen in the near future is f**ing terrifying. That would be the first step in A.I. escaping human control and posing a grave threat to our species' survival.
