Biden pardoned his son for clear crimes, yes!

That’s a relief, I would’ve been worried about his mental capacity if he had pardoned Hunter for not committing a crime.

Usually a pardon is for a conviction with some level of ambiguity or prosecutorial misconduct. Hunter himself admits to the privilege of being pardoned.

This is by the way literally word for word official statements of the ruzzian officials. The conviction rates in ruzzian courts are above 99% every year and the official explanation is that the prosecutors and police are so amazing and great, that only real criminals make it to the court. :)

What’s the deal with the ‘zz’?

This is the letters on Russian tanks in Ukraine. Sign of marauders and thieves.

For the accurate context: CZ was pardoned for a single charge of failure to have an effective compliance program. No fraud, no victims, no criminal history. No money laundering. CZ is the first and only known first-time offender in U.S. history to receive a prison sentence for this single, non-fraud-related charge. The judge found no evidence that he knew of any illicit transactions and that it was reasonable for him…

> Trump is a very twisted person, and this makes the US look bad, but the underlying crime was "compliance."

Yes.

If a CEO of any major US or EU bank would overnight decide to terminate its mere 'compliance' program, they would absolutely get convinced.

Big banks spend more than $1 billion each a year on compliance, i.e. abiding by the law. CEOs of banks that don't, get convinced, period.

It's like saying hospitals have been hiring people without credentials as doctors, or airlines hiring people with no credentials as pilots etc etc, and they were convinced for this 'compliance' issue, even though the case did not (try to) determine victims, criminal history or fraud. Yes, that's absolutely normal.

Financial institutions must put in place measures to prevent money laundering, if they don't, they get convinced, even without having to determine whether money laundering took place. Just like a hospital gets convinced if it knowingly as a policy hires people as doctors without credentials, even without having to determine if there were victims. This is completely normal.

I can't believe the dominant country is running this timeline.

Give it a few years. The US ceding its dominance by trying to re-follow its 1970s/80s playbook (now with less Volcker!) in a 2024+ world will go down as one of the biggest geopolitical own-goals of all time.

Unfortunately its "peers" are not much better. The PROC is still authoritarian and wants to invade Taiwan and some EU countries are still fighting more EU integration so that the EU could become a "real" player.

I don't buy it. A president that will literally direct his AG in public to prosecute his political enemies is simply not bound by norms, period. To pretend that he'd never have pardoned Zhao but for Obama's "increased number of pardons" is, to be blunt, ridiculous on its face. And in context, you're doing exactly what I mocked above, tut tutting about civil behavior and norms and The Discourse while the system burns…

> And in context, you're doing exactly what I mocked above, tut tutting about civil behavior and norms and The Discourse while the system burns down around you. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do then. I agree Trump is bad. Am I supposed to just say that 3 times and click my heels and then he'll go away? These are observations designed around trying to make sure, once Trump is gone, that we don't get another Trump.…

> I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do then.

Not equivocate.

Submarines generally aren’t fishing.

And we're ok with murdering dozens of people that might maybe have some kind of drugs on them? In peacetime? Without evidence? Outside of our own territory/water? We're lucky Venezuela hasn't attacked us back yet.

At least this I understand. Foreign powers, especially you-know-which-one have a strong interest in preventing EU from becoming too strong, and unfortunately this is easy to do because:

* it plays on primal human tribal instincts (they want to assimilate us, they will force or enable more immigration, etc)

* the way EU works, you only need to convince some of the countries

[flagged]

Unfortunately, this narrative's utility is pretty low and it's intended implications are severely weakened by the current administration's obsession with revenge, blaming everything on someone else, and persecuting political opponents. If such openly hostile and norms-breaking rhetoric did not exist before the pardons, then the pardons would appear suspicious.

This is nonsense.

The Biden administration went after Trump's lawyers, censored American citizens that supported Trump, and put people in prison for years that walked near the capital on J6 (and never participated in the riots).

In addition to this, Trump was brought up on federal charges that we still don't know today. They were: Charge 1..2..3..4. If you look at all of the court documents released, they didn't even have evidence of an actual crime.

It fell apart so quickly, it was so obviously made up.

Biden's family took money from foreign governments and was definitely involved in Ukraine corruption. It was pretty evident Hunter would have been brought up on charges and sentenced to a long prison sentence, if not for the pardon. This isn't even mentioning anything linking Biden to the crimes, which was a real possibility during the investigation.

It's not revenge, it's justice. I also want justice for the the corrupt politicians during the previous administrations that always seem to get out of everything.

Hillary ran an email server from her office that contained government emails, and you are really going to tell me that there's 'nothing to see here'? We would still be hearing about it today if anyone on the other side had done the same thing.

The real crimes started when Trump was running in his first term and Obama colluded with Russian agents to spy on him. This is really supposed to be okay with no punishment?

All eyes are on Trump and the only thing even close to a crime that was found was bringing home documents that he was allowed to declassify. Something every politician in history has done.

After what I've witnessed in the last decade, it really makes me question the accuracy of our history books.

They might do it as a pre-emptive defense mechanism against the brigades of de-facto censors that roam the site. I have showdead enabled, and in my experience, the only dead comments are ones which violate the site guidelines or are otherwise Bad Posts regardless of the political affiliation of the poster. Stuff like this: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45689291

I have showdead enabled, and ime it's a pretty fair split between truly bad comments and merely unpopular ones. I use the vouch button pretty often.
