Update on the OpenAI drama: Altman and the board had till 5pm to reach a truce where the board would resign and he and Brockman would return. The deadline has passed and mass resignations expected if a deal isn’t reached ASAP https://twitter.com/alexeheath/status/1726055095341875545

The board has to stick to the charter. unfortunately employees there wants to align with the profit part when they know they can damn lot of money.. obviously they will be with Altman size.

I’m sure everyone at OpenAI thought they hit the winning lottery ticket and will walk away with tens of millions at minimum and the early employees with significantly more. When you vaporize all that for some ideological utopian motives I’m sure many were incredibly pissed and ready to follow Sam into his next venture. If you gonna sacrifice everything and work 60-100hr weeks then you better get your moneys worth.

on what basis do you 'trust' the guy who tried to do a crypto eyeball identity scam? Genuinely, seriously curious.

A crypto wallet tied to your identity solves one of the biggest problems in the post AI world: human identity At least it will stop those godawful “are you human” proof puzzles.

So selling your life away for relief from recaptchas. I think they had to pay starving sub Saharan Africans more than that to get them to sign up.

Any talented engineer or scientist who actually wants to ship product AND make money would head over to Sam’s startup. Any investor who cares about making money would fund Sam’s startup as well. The way the board pulled this off really gave them no good outcome. They stand to lose talent AND investors AND customers. Half the people I know who use GPT in their work are wondering if it will be even worth paying for if…

And any talented engineer or scientist who actually wants to build safe AGI in an organization that isn't obsessed with boring B2B SaaS would align with Ilya. See, there are two sides to this? Sam isn't a god, despite what the media makes him out to be; none of them are.

Where do you go if you want to build an unsafe AGI with no morals? Military? China? Russia?

(I am aware that conceptually it can lead to a skynet scenario)

reach a truce where the board would resign and he and Brockman would return That's a funny use of the word truce.

Truce for me, but not for thee.

If Altman gets to return, it’s the goodbye of AI ethics within OpenAI and the elimination of the nonprofit. Also, I believe that hiring him back because of “how much he is loved by people within OpenAI” is like forgetting that a corrupt president did what they did. In all honesty, that has precedent, so it wouldn’t be old news. Also, I read a lot of people here saying this is about engineers vs scientists…I believe t…

Come on. The 'non-profit' and good of all was always bullshit. So much silicon valley double-speak. I've never seen a biggest mess for a company structure in my life. Just call a spade a spade.

> I believe that people don’t understand that Data Scientists are full stack engineers. What do you mean by "full stack"? I'm sure there's a spectrum of ability, but frankly where I'm from, "Data Scientist" refers to someone who can use pandas and scikit-learn. Probably from inside a Jupyter notebook.

Machine learning, data science, Deep learning= backend Plotting, Charting ,visualization, = frontend

This is proving the point of the parent comments.

My view of the world, and how the general structure is where I work:

ML is ml. There is a slew of really complex things that aren’t just model related (ml infra is a monster), but model training and inference are the focus.

Backend: building services used by other backend teams or maybe used by the frontend directly.

Data eng: building data pipelines. A lot of overlap with backend some days.

Frontend: you spend most of the day working on web or mobile technology

Others: site reliability, data scientists, infra experts

Common burdens are infrastructure, collaboration across disciplines, etc.

But ML is not backend. It’s one component. It’s very important in most cases, a kitschy bolt on in other cases.

Backend wouldn’t have good models without ML and ML wouldn’t be able to provide models to the world reliably without the other crew members.

The fronted being charts is incorrect unless charts are the offering of the company itself

It's a lot better than that. OpenAI is just very good execution of publicly available ideas / research, with some novelty that is not crucial and can be replicated. Moreover, Altman himself contributed near zero to the AI part itself (even from the POV of the product). So far OpenAI products result more or less spontaneously of what LLMs where capable of. That to say that there are crucial CEOs sometimes, like Jobs w…

Why then has no one come close to replicating GPT-4 after 8 months of it being around?

Claude by Anthropic has 46% winrate with GPT4 according to Chatbot Arena. That is pretty close.

There are significantly fewer people that would want to work with Ilya than there are people that would want to work with Sam/Greg.

If Ilya could come out and clearly articulate how his utopian version of OpenAI would function, how they will continue to sustain the research and engineering efforts, at what cadence they can innovate and keep shipping and how will they make it accessible to others then maybe there would be more support.

What I'm surprised about in this whole discussion is how little people are actually looking at Altmans worldcoin venture.

It is incredibly shady, and has the same kind of sci-fi marketing bullshit vibe going on as Elon Musk's hyperloop and Mars missions, and, come to think of it, OpenAI's marketing.

Altman+OpenAI are a hype machine that's riding a bubble to get rich enough through any scheme to be able to turn around and milk users for data, just like facebook and google.

The only difference is, he gets to twist the focus towards this sci-fi AGI idea, which works like the distraction element of a magic trick. The media loves to talk about AGI and regulating Skynet, because it's a story that gets the imagination going --- certainly much more interesting than stories about paying people 2 dollars an hour to sift through data used to train a language model for offensive and traumatizing content to feed to the autocomplete parrot.

I think it's good that he got kicked off the position as CEO, but that does not suddenly make OpenAI a good actor. Some other jerk will take his spot.

I'd bet money Satya was a driver of this reversal. I genuinely can't believe the board didn't see this coming. I think they could have won in the court of public opinion if their press release said they loved Sam but felt like his skills and ambitions diverged from their mission. But instead, they tried to skewer him, and it backfired completely. I hope Sam comes back. He'll make a lot more money if he doesn't, but I…

> I think they could have won in the court of public opinion ... [but] they tried to skewer him, and it backfired completely Maybe we have different definitions of "the court of public opinion". Most people don't know who Sam Altman is, and most of the people who do know don't have strong opinions on his performance as OpenAI's CEO. Even on HN, the reaction to the board "skwer[ing] him" has been pretty mixed, and mos…
