Do I understand it correctly, that memory is packaged together with the CPU? So no memory upgrades ever? And what does that mean for the max memory configuration?
How many people still upgrade their own memory? I honestly don't believe it's a use case anymore, even with the hostile design making it difficult.
Would you add a feature to an application or hardware if you knew that less than 1% of your users would make use of it?
This is stupefying to me. Like, when Anand did the A12 or A11 reviews, I wrote: "The craziest thing is how close [to 1/56th of a Xeon 8176] they get at 3W. That's the part that's staggering. I think so, especially with the specialized hardware in there for machine learning (although in a data center you'd probably opt for specialized hardware like discrete GPUs). There are some players on the market for ARM servers as well.
That said, Apple won't make their chips available to the greater market. They might use variations of it in their own data centers, maybe.

I agree about the upgradability/repairability. However, if you look at like a cell phone maybe it makes more sense. No one has ever complained that you couldn't update the RAM or the CPU in a iPhone. Unlikely, it'll be as expensive as just buying a new one and it's unlikely Apple would offer full motherboard replacements easily.

The Pro is quoted as 2.8x the 1.7 GHz i7. Not Intel's fastest chip but, if these benchmarks are correct, that's a big speed bump and the higher end Pro's are to come. How fast does it have to be in this thermal envelope to get excited about?
I'd wait for actual benchmarks just judging by the amount of parachute clauses in the disclosures. Power consumption numbers should be great but I'm guessing it falls flat on some compute tasks that can't leverage custom instructions.

The iPhone has a very smooth process of upgrading the phone. You turn on the new iPhone next to your old one, it prompts and voila. It's like upgrading hardware of your current phone. I'm unsure if we're at a point where these things are even feasible. e.g I have configured my MBP a lot, the .zsh file, home directory and endless configuration. I'm really worried that AMD has won the battle, but lost the war in terms of x86 being replaced by ARM in the next decade.
There is no danger to AMD in the PC market from ARM. Apple will not sell their cpu’s to other PC vendors, and other ARM chipmakers aren’t even competitive with intel, let alone AMD. What this shows most of all is that the instruction set is not what matters, it is all about the core architecture. No danger? It seems a very precarious position over the next five to ten years. If Apple find success with their strategy, then money is going to flow into the development of ARM chips from Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Nvidia, etc for their own products/servers.

I run 128GB of RAM on my desktop and I will never go back. I don't want to be forced to close my complete dev. environments to work on another project; or play with a ML project. The cost of additional RAM is marginal, to me it's the way it should be. Your time matters, your productivity matters, why not max it out?
on a laptop, the cost of the additional ram is not marginal on power consumption, so it's not only a matter of $.
