I assume you couldn't watch the video because it's just a live stream of a guy standing in a kitchen and talking to his glasses. He's not on the stage with hundreds of people on the wifi and you can't see what the glasses are displaying at all.

The link in this thread to the live glasses live demo is of Zuckerberg at FB Connect. The "fail" is when someone repeatedly tries to call the glasses he is wearing on stage. The person calling apparently has no trouble making the in-bound calls but the glasses Zuckerberg is wearing on stage fail in successfully answering the call. And the streamed video clearly shows the interface of Zuckerberg's glasses full-screen, as well as showing that the interface is being sent to the stage screen so the live audience can see it.

So, the failure was apparently with the glasses Zuckerberg's wearing on stage not establishing a two-way video call while simultaneously streaming it's own interface for the live stream and big-screen. He said it worked dozens of times in rehearsal and one notable difference was that for the real demo hundreds of other wifi devices present in the room.

I have quite a bit of experience producing live keynote demos at large tech events, so I don't think I've confused about this. As an aside, when we're being shown "Zuckerberg's POV" through the glasses I believe that's actually something custom put together for demos because the normal glasses don't even have a mode which shows the wearer's POV. Creating that view requires sending both the internal output of the glasses, which is the corner inset overlay AND the full screen output of the glasses live camera - which are then being composited together backstage to create the combined image we see representing what Zuckerberg sees. Sending all of that while establishing a two-way video call is a lot for a resource constrained mobile device.

Exactly. The real danger is how they turn every wearer into a walking surveillance camera, creating a permanent, searchable record of your life without your consent, simply by being near them. i wonder if the CCPA applies here. too bad… I have trouble imagining they wouldn’t get enough data by just being opt-in by default like chatgpt.

CCPA/CPRA provide opt out of data sharing for (ad) sales to third-party companies, but those were passed before the gAI boom. I imagine an analogue is already in motion for AI training opt-out in CA, but those two don't address model training.

But ~782 million ChatGPT users vs a few million pairs of glasses.

I already have an Android phone. What does the iPad do that my Android phone can't? Seriously, I have $300, I'll go buy one right now if you make a solid argument.

There are plenty of things my Quest does that an iPad and phone both can't do. Yes it's a toy, but it's a toy I get great mileage out of flying the F/A-18 in Microsoft Flight Simulator on a world tour. For $400, that's a steal. I've got telemetry disabled and it all runs great on my Linux box.

I'm not going to go buy a tablet to play HD Plants Versus Zombies for the 400th time. Sorry.

How do your friends feel when you are having a conversation and you are constantly pointing a camera at them?

I don't really use them that way. I don't wear them 24/7, just specific situations. Also, there's an LED light on them that clearly indicates when the camera is recording vs. when it isn't.

Wait… you’re praising the audio? Mine must have something wrong with them. I cannot listen to music or any audio really unless I’m in a silent environment. If I’m outside and there are cars driving by, or wind, or any other ambient noise, the glasses speakers aren’t loud and full enough for me to actually hear anything at a level that I would deem appropriate. And when you max out the volume, the audio breaks down —-…

Mine sound decent for what they are and I'm fairly into audio stuff.
