Ron Conway: >What happened at OpenAI today is a Board coup that we have not seen the likes of since 1985 when the then-Apple board pushed out Steve Jobs. It is shocking; it is irresponsible; and it does not do right by Sam & Greg or all the builders in OpenAI. https://twitter.com/RonConway/status/1725759359748309381

It’s interesting that board members essentially terminated their private sector careers: now nobody would want them on other boards, etc. This tweet illustrates that power players see this as unprofessional and, what’s worse, “not by the rules”.

If you are at OpenAI right now you are already at the top, it is not the stepping stone to Google or Facebook. They literally don’t care about that.

I have to admit that this was a strong shock to me, not because I admire Sam but because it was extremely unexpected.

The first thing I saw this morning was this video [1] shared on Reddit, and then I said, "Wow! This is really scary to just think about. Nice try anyway."Then I started my computer and, of course, checked HN and was blown by this +4k thread, and it turned out the video I watched was not made for fun but was a real scenario!

I know this feels hard. After spending years building such a successful company with an extremely exceptional product and, without a hint or warning, you find yourself fired!

This tragedy reminds me of Steve Jobs and Jack Dorsey, where they were kicked out of the companies they found, but they both were able to found another company and were extremely successful. Will Sam be able to do it? I don't know, but the future will reply with a detailed answer for sure.

At the moment this thread is the third most highly voted ever on HN. 1. (6015) Stephen Hawking dying 2. (5771) Apple's letter related to the San Bernardino case 3. (4629) Sam Altman getting fired from OpenAI (this thread) 4. (4338) Apple's page about Steve Jobs dying 5. (4310) Bram Moolenaar dying https://hn.algolia.com/

I’ve been pondering a more accurate metric for comparing stories over time. The raw point value doesn’t work as there’s inflation due to a larger user base. The value needs to be adjusted to factor that in that change. Something like dividing by the sum of all upvotes in some preceding time period.

or rely on HN's own algorithm, duration in which it stayed at the top of the chart?

> Mr. Altman’s departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities. The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI. Ouch -- were there any signs this was coming?

Yes I think it will be obvious to people in hindsight that Sam is a deeply disturbed and dangerous individual, and so are many of his associates. You can tell just by listening to his public statements that the guy is off his rocker.

Elon Musk was talking about his view on OpenAI and especially the role of Ilya just 8 days ago on Lex Friedman Podcast. Listening to it again now, it feels like he might have know what is going on: https://youtu.be/JN3KPFbWCy8?si=WnCdW45ccDOb3jgb&t=5100 Edit: Especially this part: "It was created as a non-profit open source and now it is a closed-source for maximum profit... Which I think is not good carma... ..." ht…

Musk is just salty he is out of the game
