there's arm64 builds for windows.

They aren't generally available, only to OEM's.

this is what that boggles my mind. Like are those benchmarks really comparable? I mean Intel and AMD have been doing this far longer than Apple and it seemed as if Apple just came in and bend the laws of physics that Intel and AMD have been limited by

Isn’t that just the ARM vs x86 difference? They’re completely different architectures, each with their own benefits and drawbacks.

I think they got it wrong. I would pay money to NOT have the touchbar.

I got one of the MBP with the touchbar this year after holding out for many years (changed jobs so had to change laptop). Man it is so much hard to do the volume changes, and there has so far for me been zero benefit.

You can use the touchbar to skip commercials on Youtube in Safari.

I love it.

So I guess Windows won't run on M1, so none of my Windows software/Steam games will work either. Will software developers start dropping support for Mac now that they'd need to maintain an ARM version as well? It's not clear how long Apple will support emulation with Rosetta before cutting it off. What's the Linux landscape look like for this chip? If I was Microsoft I'd offer some kind of Windows in the cloud for Mac users.

It's happening with Azure Virtual Desktop.

I would have thought so too, but why are there no ARM based competitors coming out with similar numbers? Or are there?

With the size of modern chips the instruction set has very little to do with an overall chip design. Most of it is a balancing act between power, performance and area for things like caches, controllers, optimizations, accelerators and so on. Then there are also factors like verification complexity and the fab technology you are choosing.

I agree about the upgradability/repairability. However, if you look at like a cell phone maybe it makes more sense. No one has ever complained that you couldn't update the RAM or the CPU in a iPhone. The iPhone has a very smooth process of upgrading the phone. You turn on the new iPhone next to your old one, it prompts and voila. It's like upgrading hardware of your current phone. I'm unsure if we're at a point where these things are even feasible. e.g I have configured my MBP a lot, the .zsh file, home directory and endless configuration. I would not be surprised if they ditch the kernal completely, and make eve…

You can do something similar with Macs. Using Migration Assistant I was able to transfer all my data (.zsh, git repos, configs, Docker containers, everything.) Took less than an hour. In fact, I did this because I needed to upgrade my RAM

I'm a little surprised that there's so little mention here regarding this being a possible precursor to the end of the hackintosh.

One comment mentions the possibility of using old ARM tablets in a hackintosh build, but this seems to run against one of the two reasons for using hackintosh over Mac directly - performance. Cost would definitely be a benefit, but I'm less convinced of the value here.

I imagine though that this is literally the end of the hackintosh entirely. With control over basically all the hardware, there are no more workarounds or backward compatibility aspects. Hell, even external GPU aren't supported as-yet.

I don't know about that, I think the confident move would have been to release the new chips along with a big design update. As you say, I think the average consumer doesn't understand the difference between an Intel chip and an Apple chip, and will probably not understand what if anything has changed with these new products. I would say developers would be the group which would be most anxious about an architecture…

If the reaction here to the touchbar is representative, perhaps they didn't want the M1 announcement to be overshadowed by the new feature related whining.
