I like to hang out on fertility twitter. It's a strange place. Since the fertility problem is worldwide, you get a lot of ideologies mixing about. There's hardcore CCP folks, free market Mormons, radical Imams, universalist preachers, the whole lot of them. They're all trying to share ideas and jumping on the latest research findings from reputable and crackpot sources. They're all looking for the recipe to get peopl…

My take is that modern culture just doesn't want kids. It doesn't matter how cheap you make having a family, for many it's just not remotely the same culture as it was 50-70 years ago. Then, for most, it was, at 20-ish, find a partner ASAP and have a family. That was "the culture". Today it's "have a great career, travel, party, netflix, game, ... and maybe someday think about kids" There's other stats like in the US…

I agree with this take. A lot of old boomers tell me how there was a lot of pressure to get married and have kids because it was the thing to do. Nowadays, there is less pressure for people to do that.

It's just hard now. Before I had kids I had a network of friends and had a great social life. Now it's just me and my wife. If I want more friends I'll have to have more kids I guess? I have 4 now. One (my first) is severely autistic. Financially the cost? I pay about 6,000 a month in daycare. 2k a month in healthcare expenses. Then community wise. Every time I've gone to take them to the movies, or to a restaurant o…

Thanks for sharing.

I feel a big part of what you experience is based on where you live. Having a family seems incongruous to the fast paced corpo world, sadly.

I moved to a small, uninteresting town years ago, mainly to escape the hustle and crowds. Honestly, I don't like it much, it's a bit too small and dull for my tastes. But more on point, the people here have all been so mind bendingly kind and patient with the kids that it makes it really hard to leave.

I wish every place were so patient, but there's probably a pretty direct negative correlation between that and 'getting ahead', whatever that means.

> The growing population of economically non-productive people requires a growing population of economically productive people to support them. At some point, you could take 100% of the output of the productive people and it would still not be enough to support retirees et al. Economic growth is the result of productivity, which is the product of the number of people working, times their per-capita productivity. If e…

> In the U.S., the peak of non-productive populace is only the next decade or so. for a contrast, look at South Korea - https://www.populationpyramid.net/republic-of-korea/2025/ That tells a quite grim story, with an outcome thats totally inevitable but will take 20 years to play out. the die is already cast, and I cant see how the country survives.

What does it mean for a country to not survive? There will be people there. There will be a system of governance. Sure, there will be hardship and suffering, but I don't see how this equates to extinction.

I agree, it's the public attitudes that are most disheartening and probably some of the reason young people are less inclined to have children. All over society people are seeing kids as a kind of personal indulgence that shouldn't be allowed to impact other people - whether its a lack of sympathy that parents have higher priorities at work, or looking down on kids who act like kids in public. At the same time parent…

It’s literally the only purpose of life to pass on our genetics to our offsprings in a Darwinian sense.

I live to be happy, but you do you.

As a (young, thus-far childless) woman, I feel it's important to add something that men may not fully grasp and I haven't seen much in the thread so far: what tips the scales in this decision is often not just daycare costs/career prospects, but also the potentially extreme side effects of pregnancy on the body. Going through the process of being pregnant and giving birth is absolutely terrifying to me and most of my…

Not to take away from your fear but women have been having children since the dawn of time. Especially with modern medical care and support, it's relatively low risk (assuming you are of an healthy young age without prior conditions). Pregnancy is not classified as a disease and within a year the body recovers quickly (Tokophobia exists however).

>> Especially with modern medical care and support, it's relatively low risk

Low risk of death, sure. But ripping pelvic floor and getting diabetes is not a low risk.

Childless women don't age well. If they are saved from the effects of a never-pregnant climax on their arteries/metabolism, they will face a dementia cared by nieces. Not that mothers don't have these but physically and psychologically they are much less burdensome. The hormone flooding of pregnancy is a health blessing.

Needs citation for your argument. All I read today on this subject claims the contrary:

"Associations between number of children, age at becoming a parent, and dementia risk were similar for both sexes. Lifestyle and socioeconomic factors are more likely to explain the observed associations than normal pregnancy-related physiological changes."

Let's reiterate: * kids are and were always born in severely underdeveloped places like Africa and during hard times like famines or wars * worldwide in the last 100 years and maybe throughout all history the education level and social freedom of woman severely impacts her fertility Draw your own conclusions about the causes and solutions of the demographic problem

None of those arguments are supported by the article.

Wouldn't it be simplest to just legalize the people who are here and at the same time also open up immigrant visas too?

It creates a huge moral hazard to reward those who illegally entered/overstayed visas

Only in theory - they went through years and decades of hell already so it's not like people are going to try to emulate it just in case it works. Anyway, countries like America "contain multitudes" and there can and will always be seemingly contradictory paths chosen at the same time.

> Wouldn't it be simplest to just legalize the people who are here and at the same time also open up immigrant visas too? Any form of amnesty encourages the same behavior in the future. How many and what kind of immigrant visas is an open question. There's definitely a need for more workers in some fields. Healthcare in particular could be well served by importing (even more) doctors from around the world. What's not…
