This keeps getting posted and is not true. Rosetta is still present and working. It throws a deprecation warning notice but otherwise runs fine. It's macOS 28 that will no longer run x86_64 apps, although games are exempt. Rosetta is basically going game only at that point. They haven't announced how long it will keep working in this capacity.

My guess (without much to substantiate it) is that it will also keep support for running x86_64 programs in virtual machines via `container` too.

That’s correct, Rosetta for running x86_64 binaries in Linux VMs is not going away. They’re no longer branding this feature as Rosetta, so it doesn’t get lumped in with the Rosetta removal for Mac binaries (although it’s all still kinda confusing)

I would argue that Steam and Homebrew users are relatively niche portions of the userbase, and that they would be more likely to own newer systems. Neither statistic comes from a sample group that's more representative of the average user, who is mostly browsing the web and using a handful of undemanding applications, and is therefore less motivated to upgrade for performance reasons.

Maybe for Steam, but my gut instinct is that Homebrew would be the opposite: it would be disproportionately popular among devs who pride themselves on keeping hardware for many years longer than most people. "Yeah, this 2015 MBP isn't great for gaming anymore, but it's fine for running vim!" is absolutely the kind of thing I hear frequently.

I bought an Intel MBP towards the end. No regrets, I had valid reasons.

But the MacOS support at this point is pretty atrocious. I mean, it technically runs, but the OS is clearly designed in a way that ruins performance on this hardware. It’ll run Vim, sure, for 2 hours on battery, hot as hell. At this point, Intel Macs are only fine for running Linux.

I guess I'm the only one who is still on x64. I don't like I'm pushed to migrate only because the software wants that, otherwise the hardware works with no problem.

This is one of the problems with the switch from shrink-wrap software to always-upgrading software. Customers feel like they bought a thing so it should work forever but what they are really asking is that new software be continually written for the hardware they bought years ago.

If you want to run your old hardware with your old software forever, you can. But of course in a connected world where a million malicious parties are trying to take over your system, this is probably a bad decision, and that’s where the tension arises.

You can install Linux on the hardware and get full x86_64 support again.

Have just read above that it's possible. It's interesting actually. So I guess I'll do that once I buy a new mac. I have a maxed out pro, with i9 and so on, so throwing it await would be a shame

I might turn that into a server just to have a new laptop with better battery life.

That sounds reasonable, Intel Macs aren't much used anymore.

I'm curious if there are any decently representative use share stats out there for Mac Intel vs ARM. I tried finding some a while ago and found nothing really conclusive (mostly for niches like developer tools or games - what's the long tail look like?).

I know at least one person who still uses an Intel one and doesn't like it

You did well to skip the 2015-2020 era (butterfly keyboards, touchbar). With that said anything M1 or newer is going to be a delightful upgrade for you. An enormous jump in performance, battery life, and thermal performance.

I'm hoping a 2026 MBP elides the notch

In 2021, I upgraded to the 2021 MBP from the 2012 first-gen retina. So I also skipped the bad models. The difference is night and day. You don't really notice the notch, especially if you view it as giving you extra space for the menu bar instead of eating into your screen.
