I don't think old CRT gramut is "very limited". Only plasma screens were as good.

Plasma has great contrast and a slightly wider gamut than a CRT. Neither one have particularly good gamuts unless you're comparing to sRGB. Many current screens can do much better.

Do they usually use the same ones? I don't know, I just went based on some diagrams in a paper comparing techs.

While coverage of SMPTE‐C and BT.709 color spaces isn’t difficult to accomplish with a CRT, coverage of new, extended color gamuts such as xvYCC and the digital cinema P3 minimum standard gamut is problematic for CRT phosphor imaging. At best, a well‐designed CRT monitor could expect to cover about 60% ‐ 70% of these wider spaces, which typically push deeper into the green section of the 1931 CIE “tongue” color diagram."

This shows plasma as a little bit better than CRT, and again lists the limits of CRT gamut.

Maybe better phosphors are possible? Or you could put a quantum dot layer on top of CRT if you really wanted to? But I'm okay with dropping CRTs.

Thanks for the research. You might be right. I had CRTs and plasma side-by-side and then I had plasma and IPS side-by-side. Plasma and CRTs looked about the same to me, while IPS looked a bit worse, but that might be because of analog vs. digial inputs and calibrations. The CRTs had an auto-calibration function (Sony G520), but other than that I never did a color calibration on any of them.

Plasma and CRTs looked about the same to me, while IPS looked a bit worse, but that might be because of analog vs. digial inputs and calibrations. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the particular IPS panels you looked at were worse, but we can do better on displays that try, especially these days.

Part of the issue is that so many things are calibrated for sRGB and that is a pretty small gamut.

I think some younger people might have never really seen a CRT. And they're positively rare now. I encountered a CRT TV in the hospital waiting room recently and was a bit startled to see one. So for those only passingly familiar, if you get the opportunity, spend a bit of time experimenting with it visually. Jiggle your eyes, look away suddenly, and then back, and try oblique angles. Maybe you'll see what they mean…

Also don’t forget to rub your palm across the screen to collect the fuzzies that built up.

My favorite thing to do around christmas was to take the aluminum foil garland strands and place them on the CRT screen.

Static would hold them in place, and when people would go to manually turn on the TV they would suddenly become energized with thousands of volts of static electricity from the ray gun in the tube and leap out like an electric snake to zap the everloving snot out of the unfortunate bastard that turned the tv or monitor on.

Which was usually me, because I liked the challenge, but if you ever have that combo available with kids who didn't grow up around them and know any better, it would be a good prank.

I'm not really a CRT fan tbh but my neighbor was throwing away a working 24" Sony Trinitron and you don't just let one of those hit the dumpster lol Hooked up my spare PS2 and got a light gun for it. Wish i had a way to play duck hunt though.

I have a 32" Sony something or other. One of the very last ones - HDMI port and does 1080i or 720p. What a find! 30 dollars, and about killed myself getting it in the house. The plan is to have all the light gun systems hooked up to it. Being able to get 1080i out of a PS2 while having the light gun work is a challenge I have not yet surmounted.

Most games won't work right if you force 1080i (which you can do using OPL) but the light gun will work with component signals just use the green plug as has been mentioned.

Gran Turismo 4 will output 1080i correctly, I've done that before, but the internal horizonal resolution is very low, so i actually prefer to play in 480p on my LCD, ymmv

There's Pelican brand wireless light guns NOS on eBay that work with both PS1 and PS2 games that I've so far had good luck with

Back in the 80s, as the home computer revolution got going, computers were typically wired up to small, cheap, portable TVs as a display device. These TVs used shadow masks, and the computer video output was typically modulated to a TV signal, and the TV was 'tuned' to the computer. For a long time my only "monitor" when I was a kid was a 12" B+W TV for my ZX Spectrum. For the day of my birthday when I got it I was allowed to hook it up to the family 14" color TV, but after that it was back to the B+W for the next couple of years!

(funnily enough, when I finally got a PC years later, the only monitor I could afford was a Philips monochrome VGA -- I guess they now sell for multiples of the original retail price? https://www.ebay.com/itm/176945464730)

i have a 55" panasonic LCD. no apps or wifi.From 2003. Still works. We have roku, which at some point in the last 4 years, it went rogue and auto updated itself for who knows what telemetry . We almost never use it now. I plug my laptop via HDMI and the possibilities are still there.

How insanely expensive was that display?

I bought a 40" plasma around 2001 and it cost as much as a used car.

Sometimes I think about the bizarre path computer technology took. For instance, long-term storage. It would stand to reason that we'd invent some kind of big electrical array, and that's the best we could hope for. But hard drive technology (which relies on crazy materials technology for the platter and magnets, crazy high-precision encoders, and crazy physics like floating a tiny spring over the air bubble created…

I think what's even more interesting is how CRTs evolved. Conceptually it was like starting from an incandescent bulb to single LED to seven segment display and then to LCD. The progression from neon bulb up to HD CRT tubes is pretty much linear! We started with "magic eye" tubes, a sort of radial bar graph, and then tubes that could raster a single line and we used them for oscilloscopes. Then monochrome 2D raster and then more and more complex color raster systems.

It's pretty neat how smoothly the technology progressed through every intermediate step. There weren't many huge revolutionary leaps, just steady progress

IT was not cheap. I remember like 1400 in 2003 dollars. I've certainly (unintentionally) amortized that cost.

Truly incredible workmanship.
