They do remind you to call a counselling number if you're addicted to gambling after the FanDuel commercial that tries to convince you to gamble though... So there's that... sigh
In the UK the gambling companies funded a campaign "when the FUN stops, STOP" with a nice big FUN the size of a bus.

#92Gambling creates no wealth for society as a whole. A gambling island like Vegas may benefit because they suck wealth from surrounding areas. Any jobs or government revenue created from gambling come at the expense of productive activities, while simultaneously creating social problems from addiction and crime. I hate the term gambling. It isn't a gamble for the state lotto that sets mathematical payouts that ensure a…

What if the loss rate on pokies was legally set at 0.5%? Right now they are around 13% (i think?), and that is pure evil.
IMO it should be increased to something like 50% or above so people stop using them altogether.

#95Legalizing mobile gambling (sports is a common form of this) is a terrible idea. I used to be heavily in favor of legalized sports gambling; like the article says, I’m not harming anyone, and it’s my choice. Then one of my close friends with a gambling problem lost a substantial chunk of his life savings on gambling on his phone. He didn’t even have to leave his house to do it. After that, I had to reconsider my posi…
Alcohol is an addictive habit and is behind over 50% of domestic violence but prohibitionist takes like yours never seem to recommend bans on the actual harmful substances in society like alcohol. Why is that? Voluntary gambling should be banned, but alcohol and Big Macs are fine despite the terrible societal consequences? It's why I can't take arguments for prohibition seriously, it's always reactionary and ignores…
Extracting everything possible from a host without killing it is literal parasitism.
Whatever their kill count, guns, alcohol and cheeseburgers at least have some other useful purpose.
Gambling's "fun" is an exploitative artificial construct only realized under finite conditions.
A cheeseburger provides calories whether or not you're hungry. How much "fun" is gambling when you're broke?

#96Look at Australia for a cautionary tale on letting gaming companies do as they please. I've worked in the industry and I'm very much on the side of letting people gamble if they choose to do so, but _everywhere_ in our society is just plastered with ads for it. The volume of ads for gambling during a sports events can sometimes exceed the actual commentary on the event. I'd ban gambling ads, and I'd ban pokies (tange…
I live in Pennsylvania and there are “pokies” at every gas station and bar around me. One gas station 15 minutes from me even set up a mini casino looking place (glass enclosure) where you can smoke and drink the tall boys you buy on the premises. All sorts of fun characters at night there. You never see anyone happy sitting on these machines, and despite the name “Pennsylvania Skill” you never hear any positive stor…
It's kind of funny how the people who love things that NEVER pay off some how snark on the gambling world because it slowly eats away at your savings.

Porn, prostitution and shopping/hoarding are the three main exceptions that come to mind.

Most other forms of entertainment do not negatively affect the lives of the consumer and everyone around them. Porn, prostitution and shopping/hoarding are the three main exceptions that come to mind.

Let me offer a counter argument from a gambling friend of mine. He says that, sure, he often loses but sometimes he wins. What about the foodie snobs who blow a fortune to eat some weird recipe? What about the theater snobs who pay a fortune to sit and watch some great actor? Or the backpacking snobs pay a fortune for some ultralight tent. They all end poorer (monetarily) because they never win. It's kind of funny ho…
