Journalism has been like that for a while now.

Sometimes it's just as bad as when the media quotes a random tweet from a nobody as their source for "the people" or "the public".

Google isn't going to suffer severe business consequences for (temporarily) losing dominance in the "AI integrated search" field, because the revenue from that field is effectively NaN compared to Google's current revenue. They might hypothetically suffer if AI integrated search grows to become a major fraction of the existing Search revenue and Google fails to deploy their massive existing ML/AI resources to match B…

Aftermath of a poor period for Google overall. From the outside, Pichai's Google looks very much like Ballmer's Microsoft: a company still milking profits generated by yesterday's innovation, but unable to produce genuinely-new stuff.

just wait until the various ChatGPTs are training each other using the well "researched content" they spamming the internet with... That alone will kill search more thoroughly then ChatGPT ever could by facilitating search at Bing.

I think we just ignited the AI Poisoning bomb. Future system will have a harder time to be trained, because their datasets will be poisoned. Wrote up my thoughts about this a few weeks ago when ChatGPT started https://blog.libove.org/posts/ai-posioning/

Reminds me of news articles that quote a couple tweets with 2 likes and no retweets and declare that this is what the people really think.

If I had a nickel for every time I've heard Google has lost its mojo. Same thing with Wave, Google Plus, Allo, Reader, countless examples.

Because of these examples, my immediate gut reaction to a new Google product announcement is wondering how long it will be before Google will discontinue said product.

As should be your reaction to any new product or service, since that is how innovation works. Things are introduced to the marketplace, and most will fail.

The reaction to the layoffs is a good example of this. Lots of CEOs in the past have conducted layoffs pretty much the same way-- notify everyone at the same time (per local laws) and write an email blaming themselves as the cause. Yet the media ran article after article for almost 2 weeks with personal stories about how people felt particularly slighted by Google, when they did it pretty much the same way as other c…

This is because Google immediately cut access to those people and treated them like personas non grata. It was a pretty bad layoff.

In the long run, sure. In the short to medium term, though, they solidly dominate the field. We're still in that phase phase of both Tesla and Bing AI.

In the short term Google has an utterly dominant position in Search, and Bing AI is basically irrelevant to this. What people are worried about are the implications for the long term.

If I were the EU, I would perhaps consider slapping restrictions on Google's Chat AI (say, Bard) as being a separate field (AI-Assisted Search) being propped up by a monopoly in Standard Search. That would hurt Google's dominance quicker than any other action. Same for the DOJ.

Remember how much trouble Microsoft got into for having a basic monopoly on desktops with Windows, and trying to bundle Internet Explorer? Replace Windows with Standard Google, and Internet Explorer with AI-based Google Search. You'll cut Google off at the knees with that move. And even if they survive the ~4-5 years litigation, they'll be severely hampered, kind of like how Microsoft was with the mobile phone market.

People hating on Sundar completely overlooking the fact that he pivoted Google to an AI first company 6 years ago, way before AI was hyped up. https://venturebeat.com/ai/ai-weekly-google-shifts-from-mobi...

He funded the Brain team that came up with major research breakthroughs like Transformers that power ChatGPT.

AI is embedded behind the scenes in pretty much every Google product, you just don't know it because it's not packaged into a fancy chat interface. They didn't push Bard because they know LLMs have problems with getting facts straight, and they still are rolling it out in response to ChatGPT very cautiously.

I'm sure there are better euphemisms than the dumpster being on fhir as that indicates someone stoking it whereas the reality is more indecision and inaction causing confusion and demoralizing the teams.

To be fair, we go with "clown car" about 40% of the time too
