Where did he imply he was defending it ? He was just pointing out that Peter Thiel gets all the hate while Zuck and the others are praised as technology innovators and saviors of humanity.

As far as I can tell, there's no new "technology" in whatever product Palantir offers (I have briefly used it before?). It seems to me that it's just a program for data visualization, which given that the government is one of their customers, is quite the grifting of the public.
The technology in the first iPhone ten years ago also existed for many years. Look how much society has changed thanks to Apple strategy of combining technology with design and good usability. That's the real and in my opinion frightening innovation behind Palantir. It's selling mass surveillance that "just works".

Most stuff I see today is just rehashes of concepts that were made from the 1960's to 1980's. The core ones you need for personal communication or running a business were all built before 1970. There's still innovation happening but most improvements were just incremental rather than ground-breaking. The most groundbreaking stuff today, like a computer in your pocket, were often result of massive, economic investment into a pile of incremental improvements by many people over time. I'm fine with this but let's not act like we're having many Xerox PARC or Doug Englebart moments.

the thing about Obama is that even if he ultimately made a bad decision you got the feeling (a feeling that i would say is backed up by evidence) that he put thought and care and consideration into decisions. i'm not trying to apologize for any particular failing of his but i think that explains the huge difference in protest reaction between him and trump
Also, it's hard to accommodate protesters when the demands are nebulous concepts of "make me feel better about this". Post Tea Party politics and protests have been rife with this problem.
