Really? Where can I see all the games this "browser" has, ranked by rating?

Due to the web's distributed nature, "all" is impossible, but there are plenty of ranked-by-rating lists of web games out there. I don't want to be spammy so I'm only gonna link one of them that comes to mind, but there are a lot of other listings you can find at any search engine of your choice! https://www.kongregate.com/ (All is impossible for both iOS and Android also: Games that don't get updated, games that get…

My point was that the web has orders of magnitude worse discoverability than the stores, otherwise everyone would obviously just publish on the web.

Saying "oh just do the thing you aren't doing" shows that one of two things is true: Either every app developer currently doesn't know the web exists, or everyone else knows something you don't.

They specifically said "app" which is why I interpreted it as exclusive to the app. The other way around is a little confusing as a question because that's the primary purpose of Patreon and is mentioned on the homepage marketing (multiple payment tiers with exclusive content).

I'm willing to consider that they moved the goalpost and not you, but I still don't get how has this thread diverged. I too got confused by oneeyedpigeon's question but I assumed from their claim about it being "setup and forget" that they simply don't know much about it.

You're half right; I just use Patreon differently, that's all. Upon reading your original comment, I remembered about the exclusive content, but that's something that's never personally interested me. I do use Patreon exclusively with a desktop browser, but I don't visit the site all that often because I tend to just subscribe to support a creator, then leave.

>but my expectation would be that judges in low-level courts will try their very best not to get noticed for setting any kind of precedent whatsoever. Is there even such a thing as precedent in the German legal system?

There isn't.

Case law isn't directly normative in civil law traditions like Germany and France in the same way it is in common law traditions like the U.S. and U.K. But court decisions that are deemed interesting do get picked up in journals, cited in academic literature, and cited by other judges in their own decisions. There is a herd dynamics psychology where judges and academic writers default to following along with the principles established in each other's decisions and academic writing, rather than go against that consensus. (Unless their conviction is very strong, and they are, depending on the gravity of the issue, willing to stake their reputations and careers on those convictions). -- I brushed over that distinction when I used the term “precedent”. In my mind it's pot-ay-toh po-tah-toh.

Sometimes I think the 30% was supposed to be 3% originally, and no one noticed the decimal was in the wrong place when they shipped it, and then people paid it anyway, so they kept it. 30% is just so unreasonable that it would be totally understandable if someone would believe this.

In 2008, the app store was launching, and physical software was still sold at Targets, Walmarts and other large retailers. A 30% margin was roughly what retailers would make off of physical software sales. By setting the App Store to be the same, Apple was signaling to retailers that they were not trying to undercut their margin, and keep a healthy relationship with them.

And it was a great deal compared to the 90% cut you had to give phone carriers to highlight your java apps

I'm aware of your point. I disagree with it. A lot of companies seemingly have found it viable to have first-class web apps as part of their lineup; Off the top of my head: Uber and Uber Eats, KFC, Patreon, (And every single competitor to Patreon), every single mini-app in China (where discoverability is much higher), etc etc.

There are more app-having companies that have web apps than not

Wait a minute, there is a payment surface you can build in iOS(e.g. iirc a stripe demo video from the epic ruling last year), where one can pay outside the apple in-app payment method. The surface could specifically get you to your own web view(i.e. your own domain or stripe's surface) for payments. The bigger idea, I thought, would not let apple figure out a company's take was, to ask them to pay up. How does this s…

The original point wasn't that it's viable to also have a web app, but whether it's viable to only have a web app. How many of the companies you mentioned don't have mobile apps at all?

Why can't Patreon hike up prices in their iPhone app? It would not only shift the cost to the user, it makes them cover the 30%, while discouraging the use of the iPhone app itself. They could add a banner before the payment is processed that says "you could be paying less for the same benefit to the patron if you pay from our website. The price is higher here because of Apple, and you're covering the fee."

Apple doesn't allow communicating that to the user and neither price differentiation to compensate their fees.

Am I the only one that dislikes phone apps?! For example, I do NOT want to install an app for my power company. Just text/email me if you need to reach me and I can do anything else through their website.

I do support apps that support unique phone features: Phone, camera, GPS, etc.
