A reality-bending anomaly game where you are the anomaly: as you interact with items in your environment, you may notice some anomalies. Moving a cookie jar opens the fridge door. Closing the fridge door makes a painting on the wall shrink, and rotating that painting switches the lights on. The idea is for the game to make logical sense, but make the player sound completely unhinged from reality "I need to put the to…

This sounds interesting; how are you guiding the player from one object to the next? E.g. if I'm looking at the fridge, I have to observe the painting shrink or that it's a lot smaller the next time I see it. And if there are a lot of objects in the room, how do I know what's relevant? I'm curious!

I haven't completely decided yet, but I'm thinking of having the next object emit a "scraping" sound as it moves/scales, that way the sound gives you a general idea of the vicinity of where you should be looking. It will take some experimentation to get the balance correct: too easy and the game isn't fun, too difficult and it's just frustrating and tedious.

Here is a tiny preview of the basic mechanics: https://youtu.be/cUU1HnT95RE

Woah! So soon after the September one?

I'm working on Habitat. It's a free and open source, self-hosted platform for communities to discover and discuss their local area. The plan is for it to be federated.

Stuck on a frustrating little bug at the moment, once I get through that I feel like I'll probably work on some CI utils to ensure that the code stays up-to-scratch and tag the first release.

Working on a original algorithm to explain human behavior from 3rd person perspective (1st stage). The whole research is divided into 6 stages. In 2nd stage, I will mathematically establish the best course of action as an individual given the base theory. In 3rd stage, I will explain common psychological phenomenon through the theory, things like narcissism, anxiety, self-doubt, how to forgive others, etc. In 4th sta…

What does that mean?

Earlier quoted context omitted.

On https://laboratory.love/faq you say: "We never accept funding from companies whose products we might test. All our funding comes from individual contributors." On https://laboratory.love/blog you say: "If you're a product manufacturer interested in having your product tested, we welcome your participation in funding." Bit confused as to your position on funding.

Thanks for pointing this out. I will clear it up! I certainly want to avoid any weird incentive misalignment. Because the testing is done by an accredited lab that provides an official Certificate of Analysis, I think I could reasonably accept funding from manufacturers once I build out a feature that would will allow visitors to download the COA PDF. No manufacturer has reached out directly yet, presumably because a…

No worries, definitely needs rewording.

Personally I wouldn't have problem with companies funding if it's via the normal route, i.e. via the web interface, such that they are just providing funds and then the normal testing/reporting takes place. But I fear this is idealistic. I can well imagine companies wanting to send you samples directly, wanting you to remove results and even threatening legal action if they don't like the results.

I’m building a small side project called https://www.localgeoguessr.com/ — a fun geography game that tests how well you know your local area. It’s still in a very early stage, not polished yet, but it’s somewhat playable. The idea is to eventually add more categories like “restaurants,” “theaters,” “roads,” etc., so you can play based on local themes. I’d love to hear your thoughts - any feedback on what you’d like t…

Nice idea. Bug: I tried in my area in the Canary Islands and all the places were off, sometimes in the middle of nowhere or even in the sea. Also, in small villages, we don't necessarily have a town hall, a library, etc (within selected radius), but the game asked to pin these.

Thanks for the feedback! I’ll work on the location stuff and small villages.

I thought your idea was really cool so I gave it a go. I live about 20 minutes from a minor US city. All but 1 prompts were in a 3-block radius IN the city (again, about 20 minutes from my town's town hall). So the 1 prompt I didn't know I guessed the same 3 block radius as the others, and it was about 2 miles away. Still in the city, not the town I typed in. It seems like smaller towns will be gobbled up by famous c…

ah yeah, the radius reset thing is on my radar. And yeah, for smaller towns it kinda pulls whatever notable spots it can find nearby, definitely something I want to improve. thank you so much for trying it out.

It's really fun! Thank you. On the result screen, let me click on the locations so that I can learn more about them. Some museums I didn't know and would click immediately to learn more about them. Or even add a little explanation of what they are.

Yeah, good idea. love that! Sweet, thanks so much for the suggestion. I've taken a note

Love this. I chose a small village and got a few clues like "War memorial", I'd bet there are many War Memorials in the 10km radius - so was impossible to know which one it meant.

Ah, that makes sense. thanks, i'll work on fixing it

I laughed at the "do you even live here?"

Haha, just wanted a little fun in there!

I got tired of trying to find a good MP3 player that just worked so I created a website to function as an online MP3 player. I started adding sources for content and ended up supporting YouTube, Spotify, Twitch, Instagram, Vimeo, SoundCloud, Rumble, WSHH, Facebook and X. So now you can create playlists from all of those sources with features you would find on any decent MP3 player such as loop, repeat, etc. I also dr…

Reminds me of Kottke's project https://kottke.org/25/10/the-underscore-music-player

Hi! Thank you for that information. I will point out that my project solves a lot of problems that are not resolved in Kottke's Underscore including the following:

- auto-syncing of your playlists to the server and locally (you can also download your playlists as .json or .txt)

- auto-shuffle is included

- complete support for mobile browsers

- the ability to play the next item (and previous item) without having to reload the page

- you are not limited to what you can listen to with an account

- you can share playlists with others

- access to my media player is 100% FREE, you do not have to pay $30yr - $600/yr as such with Kottke

Also, Underscore gives you a random song on reload whereas my project works exactly like an MP3 player and even leaves off at the exact spot on the item you were just listening to on reload. As stated on that page, it was a vibe coded Claude project which is most likely why they are missing so many features.

These are all things that would drive my crazy if they were not on an MP3 player which is why I made this solution.
