It's been wild to see people here try and spin this as a success story, because the rocket launch was missing things known to be required and the end result was as you mentioned. Massive destruction of the surrounding area which is going to require months of rebuilding and tons of $$$.
Because they achieved what they were trying to do? They said if it got 50 seconds into flight it was a success and it did. No Spin, they literally mentioned this objective before the flight, it's more wild for people to suggest that it wasn't despite it exceeding it's objectives.

#893Very reminiscent of Soviet N1 rocket. Same concept. Similar problems.
Also, N1 had many issues, non were really shown in this flight. So I don't know what you are referring to.
Maybe you are referring to the N1 failure where to many engine shut off, N1 used pure thrust vectoring for guidance and the board computer had a overly simple guidance computer where 1 engine getting shut down was automatically leading to a engine on the other side shutting down. This lead to a cascade where all engine shut down.
N1 also suffered from pipe failures because of vibration. Again not something experienced in this flight as far as we can see.
Can you be more concrete of what you are referring to?

The way you learn is testing, refining and repeating. I frankly didn’t expect it to clear the tower; max Q on the first shot is a testament to how far computational methods have come.

There is no deluge system, yet. But the aftermath of the launch today shows it really is needed

Very different situations. N1 was a technical blunder on many levels (and it wasn't a moon rocket - it was a hastily repurposed LEO launcher intended for in-orbit assembly, not optimal for the TLI). Instead of adopting the proven R-7 stacking scheme which was much easier to test piece by piece, Korolyov opted to a novel design which was too wide (17m!!), and static fires required a humongous and prohibitively expensi…
N1 got funding in 1964 and had it's first stacked test flight in 1969 (5 years). Starship was announced in 2017 (though the raptor engines in 2016) and had it's first stacked test flight today (5 years). So far development speed is the same, even with SpaceX's better technology. Whatever technical issues N1 had, could have been resolved with enough iterations. We have no idea if Starship will work and if it does have…

Some parts are interchangeable. The countdown process needs optimization. There are things missing and things which shouldn’t be there. We’re talking about speed of loading propellant, density of it, etc. Then there’s software. So much software. And a million other things. Rockets are complex, launching them doubly so.
also, to test the software you don't need to launch the rocket, so I'm not sure why you even mention that..
A few
- How long fuel takes to load
- How much is lost due to venting, how fast we need to recycle that to keep the ship on the pad ready to launch
- Actual engine startup times when many starting at once
- Actual thrust as the vechicle leaves the pad
- Actual response to control authority (how fast the ship changes course) for vectoring, gas thrusters, flaps
- Actual vibration measurements, how much measured acceleration is noise
