Germany invaded most of Europe and left much of it in rubble. You're picking a very weird, specific comparison (German vs. US cities) and leaving out the obvious comparison (German vs. Soviet or Polish cities). Also, comparing Nazi Germany, a massively powerful industrial state, with a tiny, poor territory under foreign occupation by a vastly superior power is insane.

Gaza began the war with a more powerful army than many European countries: more soldiers, more rockets, more war-fighting infrastructure. Gaza wasn't a particularly poor place before the war, certainly not by the standards of the middle east. It had mansions and average salaries that, for some professions, were higher than average salaries in Israel. It was a net food exporter.

> Gaza began the war with a more powerful army than many European countries

This is such an insane statement that you instantly disqualify everything else you say.

The point is “which belligerent is in rubble” and “which belligerent started shit” isn’t always the same.

No, the point is to justify Israel laying waste to Gaza by equating the Palestinians with the Nazis.

You might wanna take a peek at my other comments on this thread before assuming that, lol.

There's 4chan but for leftists (leftypol) and there's reddit for leftists (lemmy or raddle). I'd also argue Mastodon is kind of twitter for leftists/hackers

Yeah but I want the tech slant as well. I guess something like Chaos Computer Club? Though I don’t know too much about them.

Besides, leftypol, the other 3 I mentioned already have a heavy bias towards techies. Plenty of tech+privacy related sub communities on raddle/lemmy and lots of tech-related mastodon instances

That definition of genocide is so narrow that it would also exclude the Armenian genocide, since many were allowed to flee.

I can't find any evidence that they were allowed to flee. They organize "mass deportations" that were really just dumping them into the desert without food or water to die. Some did flee, just as some Jews fled Germany and occupied countries during WW2. If you've got a source for that I'd love to see it, neither Google nor ChatGPT seem to agree.

Please first tell me what kind of evidence you would consider sufficient, otherwise you’ll just dismiss whatever I present.

It's a ridiculous argument. The Nazis went through a LOT of effort and resources to gather Jews from all the corners of Europe, and even more effort into exterminating them as fast as they could, within the logistical and economic constraints of fighting a 3 front war. There's no comparison at all to the ease with which Israel could just drop a couple of bombs on Gaza, had it decided to do so.

The fact that I just spent five minutes thinking about it proves that it's not ridiculous at all. The scale is different (so far), but I’m not convinced there’s a qualitative difference.

It's because you're deeply ignorant about the subject. Anyone can think ridiculous thoughts in complete ignorance.

Try reading a history book about the holocaust, or even just WW2, and you'll see just how ridiculous you sound.

The only thing stopping Israel from doing that is international outrage. Israel is entirely dependent on its benefactor states like the US and, while it pushes the limits to the extreme, must at least contend with world opinion.

That's like me saying you're a murderer, but you just haven't killed anyone yet because you're afraid of going to jail. Maybe it's true, but it's a bit of a silly argument, isn't it? In western society, we judge people based on their actions.

I think he's saying that this is par for the course for asymmetric conflicts with deeply rooted insurgent groups. So if you are going to say the handling of this conflict has more to do with Israeli training/mindset/etc and is not related to the type of conflict, do you have other armies in mind that have fought similar conflicts and done better?

Battle of Fallujah? The war against ISIS in Iraq in the 2010s? Before the most recent invasion of Gaza started, there was an interview with an Israeli general about the imminent invasion. And when the question came up about what lessons Israel was drawing from other urban conflicts like the Battle of Fallujah, the response was a very indignant we-don't-need-to-learn-anything. Small wonder that the IDF claims to have…

> Battle of Fallujah

Which one? There was five, and they generally were pretty bloody.

For the second battle of Fallujah (seems like the one you are talking about), US estimated that most civilians had already left the city. However that is somewhat disputed with some people claiming usa used that as an excuse to claim everyone left in the city was a combatant.

To quote the guradian:

> Before attacking the city, the marines stopped men "of fighting age" from leaving. Many women and children stayed: the Guardian's correspondent estimated that between 30,000 and 50,000 civilians were left. The marines treated Falluja as if its only inhabitants were fighters. They leveled thousands of buildings, illegally denied access to the Iraqi Red Crescent and, according to the UN's special rapporteur, used "hunger and deprivation of water as a weapon of war against the civilian population".

Another guardian quote:

> "There were American snipers on top of the hospital shooting everyone," said Burhan Fasa'am, a photographer with the Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation. "With no medical supplies, people died from their wounds. Everyone in the street was a target for the Americans."

> The war against ISIS in Iraq in the 2010s?

So according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_in_Iraq_(2013%E2%80%932017... there was 200,000 killed and 5 million displaced.

To quote from the human rights section of the article "Iraqi government forces and paramilitary militias have tortured, arbitrarily detained, forcibly disappeared and executed thousands of civilians who have fled the rule of the Islamic State militant group", which doesn't sound great.

So i think it raises the question of if the Americans were really better than the Israelis or just better at the PR game.

He's the US Ambassador to Israel.

So his comments represent the US, and don't represent Israel in any way?

That would be a good point if Netanyahu and Yair Lapid hadn't echoed his comments and expressed intent to create greater Israel..
