It's certainly something that has people worried. I suspect a population decline and unbalanced demographics with too many old people per working age person are pretty much guaranteed. But personally I don't think it will be catastrophic civilisation level collapse. But at some point things will rebalance and turn the other way as resources, housing and such become more abundant.

I'm also hopeful we sort out the problems with big tech eventually. I was initially against it, but I'm starting to think Australia's plan to ban under 16s from social media is actually a very good idea.

Not to be a downer, but even as someone very optimistic about technology and AI generally, "TikTok but AI" sounds like a societally terrible thing to try and create. What's the benefit of this? Curious if anyone has a solid viewpoint steelmanning any positives they can think of.

The worlds knowledge base could be turned to video.

Like Khan academy but rather than old out of date videos instant upgrades from rerunning / correcting a prompt.

In practice it's not good enough to do this but no more so than other applications. It could be an interesting first iteration. /end steelmaned.

Yeah. Just a few years ago, people here would have said stuff like that was decades away at best and pure science fiction at worst.

I remember having to tell people "Don't describe too many individual objects in your DALL-E 2 prompt, because the model has trouble separating discrete concepts and the features tend to blend together."

Now we have photorealistic video with sound and, oh yeah, the model can generate an entire script and mini-plot on its own based on the most basic prompt.

For the management of this platform, the benefit is pretty obvious – traffic = money, profits, dollars, bucks, cash, coin, funds, capital, benjamins

Do they care at all how societally terrible thing it is? They found an addictive way of retaining traffic, and they will be holding to it.

The hope is that we have no employment and we moved into a different form of society where AI takes care of us and allows us to focus on more spiritual meaningful things. more than controlled, enslaved - 24/7 location monitoring (but also no need to ever go anywhere, as everything will be delivered), "perfect" nutrition (fed via IV or tasteless shakes), only "intelligent" conversation taking place between you and an AI agent (even if initially resistant, AI will successfully convince you to drop ties to relatives, friends, that is if ever allowed to make friends), all news delivered via AI-curated channels but is meaningless anyway since AI can create fake video of any leader or important person committing crimes, lying, etc, also all evidence of YOU committing a crime, or just embarrassing stuff like having a sex drive will be recorded and used as blackmail. A "job" to keep you occupied much of the day but your output is never actually needed and discarded by your AI agent "boss".

How is this not entirely obvious to everyone that this is the future? Could be 20, 50, 100 years, but coming for sure.
