What are some reasons these can’t be used as monitors?

I’d imagine only upside if they could as I’d buy one in an instant if I could use it as a monitor for my MacBook

There is a reason that the old saying is "reduce, reuse, recycle". The effectiveness is in that order: reduce consumption, reuse what you have, and recycle what you can no longer use. There is a very straightforward opportunity here for Apple to enable "reuse". They absolutely should be doing that.

Can you name an example of an AIO (or laptop) usable as a display?

I can't even name one other than an iMac that I would want to use. The whole reason to want to use the older 27" 5k iMac is that it's an incredible display. Better than you can buy, other than the 27" Apple Studio Display.

The article is about the desktop iMac model. Regardless, I think many would upgrade because ssds are cheap... RAM would lead to customers getting another year or two out of their computer...

Its very easy to upgrade storage on any desktop machine - my Mac Mini has a couple external drives attached to it. In the case of an iMac, a little Velcro tape would even hide them behind the screen.

To be honest it's the Mac that feels clunky, at least compared to Linux. Why does every app have its own updater? Why are the animations so painfully slow?

Sounds like you haven't really used macOS a lot. What is this thing about every app having its own updater? Animations slow? It's like the polar opposite, and I've been using macOS since it was called Mac OS X in 2003. IMHO the biggest asset of the macOS ecosystem is the OS itself - not the HW (which of course helps). But the OS is incredibly good as a desktop Unix.

I get your point, and Apple doesn't price RAM cheap, but it's worth noting that any RAM doesn't equal any other RAM. There's a ton of ram types with varying performance levels, and in apple's case it's RAM with direct and performant access from the graphics card (unified memory).

The fancy part is how it is attached. The memory modules themselves are one of the cheapest kinds of commodity ram.

The cost to Apple for going from 16GB to 32GB is less than $40. So of course it's priced at $400.

4, 4.5K makes little difference, and no $1300 is the US price, not including taxes. It's 12,000DKK including taxes. People has to pay the tax, so it makes no sense to not factor that in when setting the price.

Taxes apply to everything you would buy. It's not unreasonable to compare two items on their base price with the understanding that you'll be paying proportionally more when the deed is done.
