The number of people who aren't vocal tech people who actually want a smaller phone is a very small part of the market. I directly addressed the hard sales numbers, we don't need to talk about overrepresentation in HN/tech circles. The napkin math off public numbers tells us the iPhone mini sold 6 million units in the same year Google sold 10 million Pixels total, across all devices. So if 6 million units isn't enough to indicate demand for a niche phone, then there isn't enough demand for the Pixel lineup to exist either, only marginally more.

It's only a small number compared to Apple's total number of iPhones sold which is an astronomical stat to compare to. I don't think it's fair to compare mini phone demand against total iPhone sales.

The iPhone minis were the first one to not sacrifice on those things, except for battery life compared to other iPhones. Same great display tech as the normal sized iPhone of that year, same SoC, same camera.

Even with the smaller battery, iOS is so aggressive with background tasks anyway, the iPhone 12 mini was my first iPhone and I got better battery life with it than any of my Androids I used over the span of a decade, even giant ones like the Nexus 6P, despite obsessively trying to install background task killer solutions and whatnot that were supposed to save on battery.

There was very little sacrifice with the mini iPhones, for the first time in modern "small" smartphones

I actually think it's a cool feature, but it shouldn't be called "zoom". "Zoom & Enhance" would make sense. The UI should also have a clear visual indicator of which modes are pure optical zoom, which (if any) are substantially just cropping the image, and which are using genAI.

Also, over time when all of these enhanced photos are posted online and used for future model training, Pixel 13 Enhance might do even worse.

That's beside the point but I don't game on my phone (s22 with 128gb) and constantly have to shuffle storage just for photos, videos and music streaming cache. Storage is so cheap it makes no sense to pay 1,000$ for a device and then be a slave to manually managing it. It's insulting.

Strange I have a S21 and I can't tell the diff between photos taken with the S21 and those shared to me from owners of other phones. I find generally modern high end phones all take good photos. YMMV of course.

To be totally fair:

* I'm a pixel peeper

* Photos shared for most web usage on little mobile phone screens are fine

Had an S21 Ultra, bought it for the 10x zoom. But ultimately the quality loss with zoom and subsequent software processing left the phones looking unpleasant for my tastes.

The Debian experience on my kid's Chromebook in Crostini is truly fantastic. The Android experience, on the other hand, leaves a lot to be desired. I had hoped a convertible Chromebook could give them access to all the learning apps across Linux, the web, and Android on a single device; but a lot of Android apps tell the Play Store they aren't compatible, and I have to jump through hoops to get them installed.

To be fair (and, again, biased), Android apps run wildly better on a Chromebook than they do on a Mac or Windows box. :)

School Chromebooks are very limited devices (often these were low-end units purchased at the beginning of the pandemic!), and you're likely comparing it to the flagship Samsung or whatever in your pocket, which is just objectively a much more powerful computer.

Weaker by what metric? Are you asking them to explain the fall of Rome to you? The point of a small model isn't to be an interactive Wikipedia. It's there to call tools, get more data, aggregate the data and return a natural language result. It does not "hallucinate", because it only uses what the tools provide.

If you just look ar similar discussions on HN, you'll see that these models often don't even answer the specific question you ask but just give you random nonsense. I'd rather see an honest "I don't know" instead of complete gibberish. I'm not going to use any small model that has a chance of dialing 911 when asked to send a text message to a friend.

This is what tool calling is for. It's just the model being trained to produce a specific type of JSON when it needs an external call

After that it's plain code.

I haven't figured out a good (read: easy) way to backup photos from my iPhone to computer/external storage (I don't want to use iTunes software cause I don't need everything syncing both ways).

Image Capture used to be the simple way, but they removed the "delete imported items from phone" option and made it default instead now, which is quite the landmine.
