Ok, I still don't see how that's "hostile to linux" and not just windows being crappy, which it is.

Because I didn't really speak about Microsoft's hostility to Linux. I think the moment it turned from annoyance to hate was when they bought Skype and then removed features from the Linux version. Features like... conference calling... but there's a million things like that. Go talk to Linux nerds and I'm sure you'll get a unique story each time. We've all felt the pressure

IE. Enough said.

Thank you, to you and the rest of the team, for your work on GrapheneOS! If I may make a suggestion: as GrapheneOS becomes more popular, perhaps it's time to better establish users' trust in the control over it. When the project was primarily you, who was already known for technical prowess and a principled exit from a different project, that was enough for many enthusiasts. But as both the team and the user base hav…

Why should privacy-oriented individuals be forced to dox themselves? There is a company that should be able to stand on its own reputation or not.

You need more than a corporate reputation.

We're an entire industry of liars and poseurs.

It would be easy to make even a completely bad-actor company with years of stellar reputation.

Either as a sleeper for some future big attack, or one that only rarely and secretly takes action against very high value targets.

I like iPhone and won't go back to android because I am comfortably using a 6 year old iPhone on the latest operating system with no real issues. Planning to keep using it until it stops getting security updates, or the hardware fails.

I think the assertion here is there are no Android phones that don't have long term support. Apple compared to Google Pixel phones are basically the same longevity today[0][1]. With a lot of Android devices they'll have a lifespan even beyond that. Although there are choices to make at that point. You just don't have the option with Apple. [0] https://endoflife.date/iphone [1] https://endoflife.date/pixel

In those lists iphones are supported up to 7 years old, while Pixels only go back 4 and they end security updates at the same time that they end OS updates. The most recent one says it will go 6 which will match my claim as of today, but I'm expecting to keep this one going for more than another year, and I'm expecting security updates to keep it usable for at least a few years after that.

I don’t think so. Motorola Mobility is owned by the Chinese Lenovo, making it an adversary-owned entity in the eyes of most Western governments. Even with a fully open-source OS and first-class MDM, the company would struggle to gain significant market share. The Hardware Root of Trust and the binary blobs would still be compiled by a firm that Western governments view as a fundamental supply-chain risk.

Even then, it can be solved by having open-source firmware, kernels, drivers and userspace. If they make that the core value proposition, they will win.If they can guarantee the entire execution chain is open & clean, or even just flashable with custom firmwares/kernels, that would be amazing.

That doesn't solve it. If the hardware itself is backdoored, none of those other things being open source will save you.

> Motorola makes great hardware too Do they really still design their own hardware? I was under the impression that the Moto series and more was designed by a Chinese OEM, since Motorola Mobility is owned by Lenovo (China).

100% it's OEM, every chinese phone is built by some "you never heard about" company and later rebranded as Xiaomi or whatever. Does it matter though? With big enough leverage OEM will provide docs and will adapt hardware. That will cost extra, of course.

Of course it matters. Especially in GrapheneOS' context.

Nobody needs to, it is a online forum. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html

Don’t be stupid, it doesn’t mean you should spin off of an unrelated rant under someone’s comment.

Could you please stop posting snarky and/or aggressive and/or unsubstantive comments? You've been doing it repeatedly, unfortunately. It's not what this site is for, and destroys what it is for. If you wouldn't mind reviewing https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html and taking the intended spirit of the site more to heart, we'd be grateful.

Piss off mate, what I said obviously wasn’t snarky and wasn’t meant that way. What you’re doing is targeted attacks, so take up your own rules with yourself.

There’s a huge amount of wishful thinking in this that people will care, and the Lenovo thing is just false.

People won't care until they do. After two years of talking up mastodon/pixelfed and most folks ignoring me, I've gotten 2 pings from family members about signing up and migrating off of twitter/instagram. It's only a matter of time and how quickly the rug gets pulled out from under folks I think.

It’ll get bigger for a bit for sure, but it’ll never be mainstream until they change some fundamental things about how they operate.

I'm going to say this again. You aren't giving people credit where it's due. Those who live in democracies don't hold that privilege by not caring about anything. It's something that they constantly fight for. The only specialty that we possess over others is a deeper knowledge about technology and the politics behind it. But it DOESN'T have to be exclusive to us. We're not the only ones fed up with this amount of BS…

Preaching to the choir mate. I’m just being realistic.

A 67% increase of a 0.001% chance is just 0.00167%. 67% of android users in 2025 did not get their banking credentials stolen.

I think you need to check your math there. 40 million devices in 2 billion is 2%. Not 0.001%
