Your timeline is a bit off - he got arrested on 26 September 2012 (around the time Satoshi disappeared), and he became a DEA informant after his arrest which is why he didn't finally get sentenced for 8 years. So at the time of his arrest (after which he was in federal custody and the DEA were monitoring all his use of electronic devices) Bitcoin had only been in existence for three and a half years. The drug traffic…

Thanks for the details! I assumed he had at least some access, control or leverage. (But losing keys is very easy, especially if the feds take your devices and your means of buying new ones, and freely accessing potential backups.)

We'll never know but I honestly think it might be him, there's other evidence:

Commonwealth English speaker (grew up in Rhodesia/SA) - Sassaman was american and it would be odd for him to adopt British english as Satoshi

Known Windows user and there are supposedly similarities in the tech stack and code between early Bitcoin client versions and TrueCrypt which Le Roux is widely believed to have developed

Early Bitcoin client versions included poker game code for some reason - Le Roux is known to have been interested in this and at one point was considering opening an online casino

On the other hand, evidence against Le Roux and in favour of Sassaman:

The whitepaper has weird references that suggest the author was involved in cryptography academically in the Benelux countries. Le Roux did live in the Netherlands at one point but afaik wasn't involved in anything academic whereas Sassaman very much was

It's a horrible point, it assumes that the person being doxxed is the claim of the doxer. There is no wait they can be 100% sure, so they will ruin someone's life over what?

> There is no wait they can be 100% sure, so they will ruin someone's life over what? What harm is caused by this article, do you think? He is already incredibly wealthy, already has security, and many people already assumed he was Satoshi Nakamoto. Claiming that someone invented a world altering technology is neither libel, nor defamation, _even if it an intentional lie_. If it is not a lie, or is merely a mistake i…

Doxing itself is the harm, if not 100% validated. The article is purely subjective.

Let me shed a tear for the old white men, who hold all the money and power in today’s world p- these heinous social media “attacks” will leave them crying and shaking

You just validated exactly what I said was going to happen. You think every old white person holds all the money, you sir are a racist. Do you admit it?

I really didn't want to comment on this, but racism, ironically enough doesn't discriminate. If you want to discriminate against white rich people, you then say that you wouldn't against black rich people. I'm not saying you shouldn't feel upset about rich people's behavior, but their skin color shouldn't enter the conversation.

I don’t want to discriminate against anyone - my point is that you can’t discriminate against people who hold all the power, so I won’t have much sympathy if someone trolls them online. And yea I believe anyone who is really rich (like 8+ figures rich) is morally bankrupt.

You just did, all white men do not hold all the power. That is racism.

I've always assumed it was Hal Finney, the first recipient of bitcoin from Satoshi, who died of cancer. I mean, if your new creation shakes out, you have a way to pay your hospital bills. Also I feel the only person who wouldn't be tempted to withdraw the money would have to be the dead creator of the coin/protocol.

Simple question for anyone who’s familiar with this world of journalism: how does the author and the NYTimes cope with the fact that making such claims paint a huge target on the person they claim to have “unmasked”? Satoshi’s wallets are worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and there have been kidnappings/torture/murders for much less than that. Do they just not care about the ethical implications? And really, for…

> What is gained by “unmasking” Satoshi other than satisfying one’s curiosity? Those sweet, sweet clicks, and the eyeballs they bring along with them, of course

It's one of those topics that's evergreen for a perennial article. If there's a slow month of ad revenue, just write up a "Who is Satoshi" article, end it with "we may never know" and collect the paycheck. Honestly, I expected better from the NYT.

No I said I have no sympathy for the old white men who hold all the power. Doesn’t mean every white man is in power or wealthy.

I think you just want to be upset or something.

Anyway racism against white people is somewhat ridiculous

for a good counterbalance to those just finding out the nyt is a state dept mouthpiece at best, read about real journalists and why there seem to be so few of them, read Pegasus by laurent richard. Spoiler alert, real journalists who expose powerful peoples' wrongdoings simply get killed.

Glen Greenwald is alive and kicking.

Along with his zero credibility. Dude torched his career just like Taibbi.

The thing is, most of the people heavily involved in early Bitcoin are fairly characterized as cryptoanarchists, a group strongly devoted to the principle of privacy and liberty effected through technological means. The refusal to provide personal communications metadata by such a person is evidence of nothing but their steadfast commitment to the philosophy that presented them with the opportunity to be part of thos…

Then again, if I weren't Satoshi, but people suspected that I was, I'd be willing to do just about anything to prove that it's not me. No one in their right mind would want that kind of target on their back. Satoshi is either dead, or he lost his keys and probably wishes he were.

Or he cares more about promulgating the philosophy of cryptoanarchism than he does about his personal enrichment or safety.

Most attempts to analyze what Satoshi would do suffer from a serious theory of mind blindspot. Just a failure to imagine someone who's motivated by significantly different things than the average person. It's the same failure as when people marvel at billionaire CEOs who continue to work despite having more than enough money to satisfy their every material whim.

Yes, if I were Satoshi or Bezos I'd have fucked off to a private island long ago. But they're not like me.

Oxygen, an element serial killers need in order to kill again.

Nearly all air molecules were once part of a dinosaur fart.

> Nearly all air molecules were once part of a dinosaur fart.

While it is plausible that at least a handful of molecules (out of the sextillions) in a breath you take passed through a dinosaur, i don't think that qualifies at "Nearly all".
