This is my impression as well. From what I've seen, many Gen Z people only loosely even think in terms of things like "files". They are used to integrations where everything just lives on some website or in a Google app and the way you locate things is by searching.

I'm also noticing another trend with my 16yr old daughter and her friends. They are craving old school offline experiences. They have all dragged out the parents and relatives old music collections, cruising second hand shops for old CDs etc. when they visit others houses they are checking out each other's household book and music collections. She recently got a cheap digital camera with no screen and just a shutter…

That's cool to hear. I fear it's not the main trend, but it's comforting somewhat.

The educational and informational queries were always the least valuable from a monetization standpoint. Chegg Answers could rank for these low competition (also low commercial intent) terms-- think queries like phrases from textbooks students would be querying. There is virtually 0 way (for people besides Chegg) to monetize these types of queries. Now Google can answer these queries directly, albeit with the assumption it costs them slightly more to serve these AI responses than a search query.

AI overviews are breaking the implicit "contract" for informational sites-- "we will create content to rank on Google with the expectation of monetization via display ads, mailing list growth and/or sales commissions of some sort." If these sites now lose 90% of their traffic, they simply go extinct. We have already seen the destruction of the old web era sites and the walled gardens being built. How many new sites, at the same frequency as 15 years ago, 1) get built and 2) get visibility without relying on one of the fickle walled gardens for an audience?

Google will probably figure out a way to monetize these informational queries by building better profiles of users. Or most likely, they start slipping in commercially biased responses-- either natively or disclosed, but probably based on all user conversations instead of the current one.

The culture on discords tend to be way better than anywhere else on the internet, but discord really sucks to use. It can do per channel and per server notifications for all messages, @mentions, or none. What else would you want?

I lurk in a bunch of Discords for things I'm not active in, but don't want to have to find an invite to if I need to ask a question in the future.

I always have a notification badge on Discord, and I hate it. Too many servers have channels where I get pinged, even though the channel is muting. I'm presuming someone is doing something like "hey @all, play with me"

I ought to be able to register that I will never ever care about this channel. Please ignore it for me.

I think the Magician equivalent is David Blaine, making people pass out from shock because you smuggled a fake spider into their ear or something. Mostly we do kids entertainment though, so that's not really going to convice moms to hire my magic show for Bobby's birthday

Ok here's an idea, you find leads of houses in your area with a kid whose birthday is coming up and send them flyers. You're a dev guy this should be up your alley. $1 each with Postgrid API or do it yourself and it's the cost of your time + stamps + papercuts. Where do you get those leads do you ask? That's actually a good question and I'll need to get back to you on that. Make sure to put a QR code on the flyers.

I wish Discord had a betrer account switcher on mobile. I have a realname account for friends ana family, and another I use with randos.

I use discord PTB and Canary to run multiple instances with different accounts on a single device. It also allows running multiple instances with a single account (to be on multiple vocals at once for example). The only drawback is the release cycle is more frequent and I need to update every time I boot.

Is this a feature of PTB, or something coming soon to the stable version?

It means that if you zoom out, things look more similar. Similar patterns, similar problems and solutions, but different components. All the various shades of red are all red. All news is engagement bate (if it bleeds, it leads), but every piece of news is different. I didn’t ask for an interpretation of the post, I asked for other times where anyone would use “same” and “different” interchangeably as words (in a sentence, presumably)

It kind of seems like the sentence I quoted was gibberish that’s short enough to seem vaguely profound. Unless somebody could give other examples of when those words are interchangeable (then obviously dogs is eggs), but as it stands it’s a duck pregnancy is optional type situation

They want to get there (embedded ads that look like content), but right now it's not so easy - how can they confirm to the advertiser that the ad was seen? What are they gonna do? Put in a 700-character long link in the conversation? I'm pretty certain that the ChatAI providers want to show ads, but until they can bill for it, they aren't going to. At some point the billing will work, and then they will.

My point is more that thinking advertisement is simply "here's a coupon buy this thing" is naive. The more pernicious flavor is "this thing that everyone knows hurts you (but makes us money) isn't that bad. In fact it's good! You should do it!" That flavor is pervasive to such a degree that people don't even register it.

The AI people call this "alignment" or "safety".
