I no nothing about superconductors. And have been largely ignoring this until it seemed more certain. Can someone ELI5 why this matters? What does it enable technologically? Flying cars? Fusion reactors? Magic fix for global warming?

Conventional conductors have resistance, so when you run electrical current through them they heat up; this is why laptops and desktops have fans to cool the chips, why phones get hot and so on. Superconductors transmit energy without resistance, so the heating problem goes away and the energy costs of running the device go way, way down. There are no prizes for being second in science.

Except, most likely, in exactly this story with the second paper from the original Korean authors (if things can be proven to be true).

I agree, it could use more of the easy details, however, I don't have much issue with 10^-2 Pa, since standard atmospheric pressure is 101,325 Pa, so 0.1 Pa (10^-2 Pa, or 1.45x10^-6 psi) is definitely understood as a vacuum, but you're correct, why not just add "vacuum" for thoroughness. I know mercury gauges use to have a 0 to 30 scale sometimes (not 0 to -30), and that was confusing!

10^-2 is 0.01

Classical off by one when you wrap through zero (not sure if this one has a specific name).

The last week reminds me of the story of Bardeen & Brattain's invention of the transistor (e.g. in The Idea Factory ). It barely worked and heaven forbid you bump the table. There was even a third slighted figure who wanted credit. Part of me wants to be skeptical but OTOH if it's hard to reproduce that seems totally normal. How exciting that some other people have got it working now.

Funny enough Bardeen went on to work out the theory of conventional superconductivity later (with two other researchers) and got another Nobel prize out of it. What's your issue with Shockley btw?

Nobody can pick fights with Shockley any more (he's dead) - but Shockley is almost a household name, and Bardeen/Brattain's aren't. It's worth trying to adjust the record, both because Shockley was an abusive jerk and because he gets more credit than is due for the transistor.

(I'm not denying that Shockley was brilliant and effective.)

This is obviously a quickly produced paper to get the finding out but.... I find there to be so much missing and so many things poorly worded or posed about their process that would have taken zero time to expound upon, it's infuriating. "All the reactions are carried out under 10^-2 Pa" OK, I know they mean 10^-2 of vacuum. But why not say that? "10^-2 Pa" isn't enough. Was this a full vacuum oven? Done in sealed qu…

I tried searching this strange string of nouns but was met with some strange results. What are you referencing?

Iris Alexandra studies plants in Russia, and also dabbles in chemistry from her (home?) lab. Over this past weekend, she's been working on replicating the LK-99 results herself, heaping a bunch of lighthearted scorn in the process in typical Soviet style. It's highly entertaining, so she's gotten herself a bit of a following online.

People are badmouthing her in part because she's openly plural and trans and lesbian and a catgirl and she has Opinions On The Internet, so her bullies question her credibility based on the stereotype.

She also wears her Soviet culture on her sleeve, so folks incorrectly think that being a communist means she supports what Putin is doing in Ukraine, despite her statements. (Keep in mind that being so openly LGBTQ+ isn't exactly smiled upon by the Russian state at the moment...)

There is an anthropic line of reasoning over Everettian branch universes where you can actually expect these types of highly unlikely events to happen more often than chance alone would predict if they promote futures with more Born-rule weighted observer-moments.

Just to add on the "nonsense" line. Using the antropic principle to talk about the future is completely absurd. There is a huge amount of what I think in unawarded debate about applying it to the past (IMO, it's very clear where it should be used), but applying it to the future is completely against any kind of logic.

Why? If the argument works at this point in time when reflecting on our history what makes it stop working for future observers who reflect on their histories?

It can certainly lead you to some pretty wacky-sounding conclusions (looking at you Frank Tipler) but I can’t see why it’s obviously wrong for future observers to deploy it in just the same was as we do.
