This is the way. Use a tui client like alpine or mutt, and enjoy managing 100s of thousands of emails in ms. I feel physical pain when I have to see colleagues and acquaintances wait for several seconds in their heavy web interfaces. I can manipulate batches of emails with terminal tools and the power of Maildir.

I do the same, but with mu/mu4e in Emacs. Not having to open a browser to read email also helps with staying focused for me.

In my 25+ year career, I've encountered maybe two dozen or so people whose e-mails and chats were terse, yet admittedly succinct, one-liners and most of them were also raging assholes to work with. The ones who also didn't use capital letters or punctuation in their communications were uniformly assholes.

My experience is completely opposite. Majority of the people send short emails - sometimes badly written, sometimes well written. And when someone sends long emails, people dont read them. They kinda skim them and ignore the rest. And no, they are not all raging assholes.

Correct, I was referring to being arrogantly blunt and insensitive, not short/efficient emails.

I've tried Thunderbird, Kmail, and Apple's client, and maybe I just have too many emails, but these apps completely crumble under my inbox. I don't see any "shine" with these third-party clients. Of the exemplars listed, nmh is by far the most flexible and capable of handling large inboxes. The reason why is that it is a set of command-line executables which can be scripted with whatever language you prefer. So prioritization and/or categorization is a matter of how one wants each to be defined.

I used IMAP via fetchmail[0] with nmh to allow multiple MUAs (on different machines and/or OSs) access/management to the same email accounts with great success. IIRC, for nmh I used lynx to render HTML messages and xview to display image attachments. Other attachments were processed separately but had similar workflows.

I use it with Spark on macOS and iOS (Spark Classic) and it just works. Archiving works fine, marking as spam actually moves and 'activates' Fastmail's training. There's email masks, aliases, the UI is always fast and responsive in the web view when I go there.

Have you had any issues with Spark or are there any downsides using it? I haven’t used Spark since I started using Fastmail and have been thinking about it

let me try a different tack - 99% of the value is in the affirmation of the response and the demnonstration of responsiveness, not the actual content value of the 5 words. you could send a thumbs up emoji, you could send a ".", just the "seen" and "acked" value is the value of that 5 word button

Which again underscores the question of why we need an auto-generated response when a thumbs up will do.

Of course a reply is valuable, but are those options really saving any real time vs a quick single word acknowledgement, which is often faster than even reading and considering the options?

None that I've found. I think just make sure when you configure the account in Spark that the folders are set correctly (i.e. archive and spam folders are mapped to their folders in Fastmail) so you get the correct functionality from them.

I don't believe I overpay. I use my phone for hours a day. It is a marvel. I find it far superior to Android, which I used for years.

Yet I didn't buy the phone for the maps app. I have other choices for maps providers. It is perfectly acceptable to me that Apple charge me for additional services like maps.

If only it was based in europe. Every few weeks i look into detaching from gmail and wonder if proton is the way to go

I did comparison of Fastmail, Protonmail and Mailfence. Finally, I decided to go ahead with Mailfence due to their end-to-end encryption and stronger privacy focus. I am very happy with Mailfence so far.
