Instead of Epsteins blackmailing disgustful human nature, it'll be rogue AIs sending selective blackmail, 24/7, to the spiteful among us (e.g. to motivate targeted killings, either by human or machine). >All of this should remain a bridge too far, forever. Hopefully Singularity will be graceful, killing-off everybody simultaneously #PaperclipMaximizer #HimFirst
> Instead of Epsteins blackmailing disgustful human nature There is no evidence that Epstein blackmailed anyone. The stories around this are wildly exaggerated.

It's so weird how Epstein manages to pop up in basically all US discourse, even a conversation about AI use in the military.
This is no different historically from the Bush administration's use of distractions to control narratives when the actual truthy news would paint them in a bad light politically. Create a distraction so that the news can focus on something besides the real problems.
Another cycle in the process. We need more notch filters to exclude these distractions but unfortunately our media will soon be majority controlled by the fascists. Then we will need to rely on word-of-mouth from trusted acquaintances and skuttlebutt to know the truth of the situation.

The point that I've not seen someone making: do you even need LLMs for domestic surveillance? I can grab a copy of EmbeddingGemma or Qwen3-embedding or a similar model and do semantic clustering of existing data, since the "retrieval" is the most important part for such applications, not its integration into a LLM.

i genuinely do not understand why anyone is acting like this is something new; has this not been the status quo since forever? futhermore this is kind of a naive framing painting the state as somehow separate from majority of the capital...
Sure, the state has always had theoretical power to do this, but when was the last time something remotely like this actually happened?

It's part of the dismal/pathetic form of American exceptionalism that's taken root in the last decade. "We mustn't consider dealing with problem x because it wasn't considered important by our founding fathers" "China are catching up, so we need to cower behind a tariff wall rather than risk losing an open competition" "Other countries with similar legal systems have successfully reformed their supreme courts, but th…
None of this is entirely new. Americans have always fetishised their constitution or founding fathers. While there has been an era of free trade, that is over, and I think the west in general is in a difficult position (ultimately as a result of believing the "end of history" BS). As for getting shot, while the chance of getting shot in the US for opposing the government is much higher than in similar circumstances i…

#826Domestic mass surveillance might feel tolerable when you live in the country conducting it. But how would you feel about other countries adopting similar policies, and thereby mass-surveilling the American people? Because that's exactly what these policies authorize when applied to the rest of the world.

USA can’t just deny the ability to leave if you are deemed to be important for national security?
But they could open up a branch in EU with some people (and their money), and then step by step employ the people from the US in EU, bleeding out the US entity on a long run: At least yet, no one can stop their top scientist to move to another country with the knowledge and just pick up their work in the new conutry.
They can and do do this routinely. Many individuals get marked and regularly go through additional screening if their travel plans raise flags. This isn't even unique to the US... most Western nations do the same. If there is a serious brain drain risk, the US government can easily go all out and have the whole company put on the no-fly list.

It’s a descriptive statement about the law. But you’re mischaracterizing the normative principle underlying the law. It’s not based on power, but rather the moral duties incumbent on citizens.
The moral duty of a citizen is to sabotage their country when it becomes immoral.

this entire administration has been a constant stream of "important turning point for the US" moments
I think most, perhaps all of those "important turning points" aren't really important turning points but just business as usual.
