Kinda overlooking the fact that Lester B Pearson won the Nobel Peace Prize for his leadership in Canada's efforts to lead a neutral force to force peace in the Suez Canal.

Interestingly, as a British person, I've never heard of Lester B Pearson before your comment. Possibly for the same reason it took me so long to find out even a single negative thing about the British Empire: the UK not wanting to talk about anything embarrassing in its history.

Lol, no you're not going to pass a constitutional amendment that effectively removes all the voting power of everyone outside the major coastal areas. You couldn't even pass the ERA, and that one was actually the pre-2010s version of feminism, where actual equality was being advocated (and which, overall, I'd have supported, short of forcing women to be draft-eligible).

And the main reason why you'll never pass that, or any other legislation you promise, is that Democrats lost their ability to convince anyone else. They threw it in the trash and replaced it with screaming "__ist and __phobe" at literally half the country anytime they step out of line of the latest Official Beliefs, which keep getting revised.

Absolutely not. History has shown again and again that human memory is short and greed is unbounded. If there isn't an active fire burning under people's asses they'll choose the $0.01 cheaper option even if it ends up being much worse for them in the long run.

There's no memory to be needed. The US is officially an unreliable ally. They have been for several decades now. They will continue to be so. EU politicians might've been overly ambitious but they're not naive.

My fear as a Briton and European is that even when Trump departs, the distrust remains so long as the US continues to be so politically divided. The chance of Trump being replaced by someone similar or worse will make most European politicians (incl UK ones) throw their hands up in despair.

It should be your hope rather than your fear. The UK seems a lost cause though, even under Starmer it has been far more appeasing than any (West-)EU country. And as right-wing as Starmer is, your next PM will inevitably be even moreso and more buddy-buddy with the US. Perhaps even a personal friend of MAGA.

The UK strongly backed Denmark over the greenland situation. I’d be a lot more worried about the EU’s “appeasement” of russia (slow acting germany, hungary etc) than the UK’s carefully navigated and level headed US relations. That’s what will undo the EU.

Well, then the EU can also ban the sale of ASML machines to US and anyone dealing with the US. Let's hope we won't get to that.

The US actually controls the distribution of those machines already, because they incorporate made-in-USA export controlled technology.

They still can't force a delivery to them, as many critical components are Made in Europe

For what it's worth, if you want a self hosted replacement for Zoom Galene has worked great for me, The server requirements are remarkably low, especially if you are like me and just need a personal video chat to a few people. I run it on an old apu-2 with openbsd(which is just about the worst combination and it still works great) As a bonus there is no client, that is, the client is just a web page so very low frict…

I just installed it and went on a deep dive for hours today. Interface is kinda clunky but it seems to mostly work.

I had a lot of trouble getting certificates updated while running on my OpenWRT router. But other things were easy but tedious, like setting up a DNS record on one of my domains, and temporarily opening ports for it an certbot (a rust clone) etc. But now I feel I understand it all and tweaks should be easy from now on.

Impossible n'est pas français ! And you seriously are saying Teams is the greatest thing since sliced bread? Ok I concede the videoconferencing works, but it's quite a feat to make a text chat window so slow and buggy. Sometimes when I type, it is spelling stuff backwards! Message texting is a solved problem since IRC or ICQ
