Yes, good points though the money angle is debatable.

The USA and Europe are 'on average' also more pro-science than the rest of the world, but I think the East has the edge in education and comes across as more focused on progress. Probably this is underpinned in part because they have a ton of very hard problems that need solving and in the 'rich West' people are much less driven because their lives and the lives of their families are on average already quite plushy.

It makes you wonder what could happen in Africa and Latin America once they embrace education and science.

I find there to be so much missing and so many things poorly worded or posed about their process that would have taken zero time to expound upon, it's infuriating. I agree, it could use more of the easy details, however, I don't have much issue with 10^-2 Pa, since standard atmospheric pressure is 101,325 Pa, so 0.1 Pa (10^-2 Pa, or 1.45x10^-6 psi) is definitely understood as a vacuum, but you're correct, why not just add "vacuum" for thoroughness. I know mercury gauges use to have a 0 to 30 scale sometimes (not 0 to -30), and that was confusing!

Yeah, that's why I said this is an unpopular opinion. Historical records tell us that energy consumption is a great indicator of civilization advancement, but so is territory. Now, the problem is that there is no further territory to acquire for us as we have pretty much exploited our planet to its bones. Free cheap energy will just make the planet crumble under our weight.

You've said or implied this twice, but haven't put forward even a plausible mechanism why this would be a crumbling downfall.

The fuel is abundant and safe. The byproducts are safe. There are no carbon byproducts to contribute to global warming. I don't see any logic to your statements besides: previous bad, therefore next bad. I believe this is the definition of a non-sequiteur.

Please correct me if I am wrong or have missed something.

I'm not too familiar with this space. Could someone explain how big of an impact to the world this discovery is? What does the future of this technology look like over the next 5 years?

I think with a solid verification of superconductivity at room temperature, we probably don't see anything in 5 years, just because the production is so hit or miss. But I do think we see massive investment and research on this line of materials and different production techniques. Going from Science to Engineering and making this a thing you have plant making. I think its a 10+ year thing but its big.

Well... maybe. Or it could become like graphene.

Not quite related to 2) but if the superconductors research pans out, portable high field desktop sized MRIs would be in the bag. Current portable MRIs are all low field (and to a certain extent, somewhat useless).

So far this material (and pretty much all liquid nitrogen ones) can't be used to create MRI sort of fields. There's a reason they all stick with liquid helium.

It's quite likely that if you cool this thing at liquid nitrogen temperature, its performance will improve a lot.

Not the revolution people are claiming, but it's a huge gain nonetheless.

It's not biased, it's a fact. I see it all the time as PC/AC/reviwer/etc.

There is deluge of terrible papers from China that are just a mess, below any imaginable standard. Ones that labs in the EU/US/Russia/Japan/etc. don't put out. Yes, everyone has to publish, and there are bad papers out there, but the volume and low quality from China is unmatched.
