Venmo banned me for life because I and a friend both signed up a new account to try to send money to each other. The money disappeared, both accounts were locked and they told me I'm never allowed to open a Venmo account again because of my terribly fraudulent money laundering.

JSYK, Venmo and Paypal support a Visa+ Payname (configure it in each app). The Visa+ Payname thing is Visa's attempt to allow cross-app payments but AFAICT only Paypal and Venmo support it....

But if you ever need to send money to a Venmo account from Paypal, or receive money from a Venmo account in Paypal, you can do so with the Visa+ Payname.

I have some friends who are unbanked and banned from a lot of apps, this little work around has saved a few on occasion.

Yep. I tried paying with my card on Steam and it showed me a QR code and I was like 'what do you want me to do, hold my card up against the screen so it somehow magically makes the transfer happen?'. There simply isn't an alternative to PP in many cases. It sucks, but that's the state of online payments today. Crypto would be an alternative if it were the least bit stable. Wero seems promising but at the moment it doesn't work.

I remember a long time ago on Reddit I saw a post saying (paraphrasing) "AMA: PayPal locked up $600,000 of my money because my video game is selling so quickly they think it is a scam." Turns out this was Notch selling early alpha versions of Minecraft off his personal website, which totally did look like a scam at the time.

I didn’t get an impression that it looked like a scam. What makes you think that? The game was free before he started selling it.

You might consider crypto debit card services - you load up crypto and can use it like a normal CC

At this point, I just operate under the assumption that every bad actor out there already has my data. Six months of exposure is an eternity. It really makes you question the entire trade off: we hand over our personal information in exchange for ‘free’ or convenient services and this is what we get in return. The product-is-you model only works if the company holding your data actually bothers to protect it.

I had an almost identical experience about 20 years ago too. I imagine they are still just as bad.

I think it is highly likely the wealth of the PayPal mafia founders is partly derived from this theft.
