> How much do you think they should take? A 15–20% fee would be much fairer in my opinion. They’d still be making plenty of money while letting developers keep more of what they earn through their hard work. At the very least, they should differentiate between big players and smaller indie developers.

Taking a larger cut from big players would incentivise them to make them create their own marketplace, where they exclusively publish their own games. Then we're back to square one. Honestly, I think 15-20% is doable, if they make money in other ways. CS skins, new game releases from inhouse, etc.

You take the same cut from big players and give the smaller ones a break. I think Valve could afford that without any issue.

> Valve is not buying other store makers nor actively sabotaging efforts to do so. This is really key, when you see Epic bribing devs to get exclusivity, giving away games for free, they do this and still not succeed because they are actively hostile to their users. Where is my Big Picture mode? Where is my support of Linux? They've been at it for years and yet still don't actually want to provide a service that is d…

>because they are actively hostile to their users. >Where is my Big Picture mode? >Where is my support of Linux? Calling the lack of linux and TV support "hostile" is bit of a stretch. The two combined probably makes up 5% of the user base at most, and there are probably workarounds (eg. using wine or the regular interface)

Do you really think that? All Steam users are buying games in Steam instead if getting them for free on Epic Games Store because they have a library on Steam, not because Steam is a better product?

You're even allowed to sell your game cheaper on other platforms (not Steam keys, separate keys for those platforms) so by all means charge the 30% more on Steam if you need to.

If you don't try,you will never know.

Yes - I tried the other platforms. Much to my surprise (and granted, I have the means to do so) I will favor steam whenever possible, it’s just significantly better.

People favored Google as much as possible in the '00s and then they turned evil. For games, I favor Good Old Games rather than Steam as much as possible and go out of my way to wait for releases on their platform. Whatever becomes of them, at least I'll have my downloaded DRM-free version of my purchases.

Yeah, they also force you on a very crappy OS which they decided not to support.

I used to buy on GOG, but open source support and portable pc made a huge difference
