"Open" means if you already have a copy, you are free to share it as you like. It doesn't mean someone is obligated to spend money giving it to you. The FSF always charged a profit rate on Emacs tapes.

That’s just nitpicking. Even by your definition it’s a derivative work, and regardless then it’s just a translation of a subset of the script.

Holy batman the takes in this thread are pretty terrible. You can still get full data dumps, you can still use the free API but they are limited the number per period. As a heavy user of OpenSubtitles this change looks completely reasonable for such a wonderful service.

Not even similar, you can still get dumps from OpenSubtitles. But I suspect your comment like many others are from users who don't even really use OpenSubtitles often/ever.

If you mean OpenAI's Whisper, has anyone created an actual product that people can use with downloaded videos?

I use MacWhisper to transcribe and summarize YouTube videos. Works great.

If you tried to sell a translation of all the dialogue that was explicitly intended to be used with a legally purchased copy of the novel (don't ask me how, it's not my metaphor), I'm not sure you would.

I have been using Addic7ed [0] in cases where I need subtitles. Any new shows/series get their subtitles uploaded extremely fast, and as I understand translations also happen there (when already not available from a streaming service).

On the other hand I was using VLSub, a VLC addon, which downloads subtitles automagically. But now I see it used opensubtitles :(
