Eh, this feels different. There are some immediate utilities delivered from ChatGPT and Midjourney that feel like magic. Will they get over hyped? Sure. Neither of those are searching for information, though, which is a very different use case.

If 95% of the time GPT writes a great thank you note, that's very useful. If 95% of the time Midjourney gives me a good stock image, that's great! If 95% of the time GPT gives me a correct search result, that's horrible, because I now have to fact-check every time I do a search; I can no longer trust the output.

Unfortunately Microsoft didn't realize this and may have just bought itself a $10 billion parlor trick machine.

Google isn't going to suffer severe business consequences for (temporarily) losing dominance in the "AI integrated search" field, because the revenue from that field is effectively NaN compared to Google's current revenue. They might hypothetically suffer if AI integrated search grows to become a major fraction of the existing Search revenue and Google fails to deploy their massive existing ML/AI resources to match Bing/OpenAI's unpatented, non-secret and easily-replicated techniques. And big firms have made such strategic errors in the past! But none of that is going to happen in the short term.

Every new thing gets hyped up as the "killer" of existing businesses. Siri, Alexa, etc. were all supposed to be existential threats to Google's search, and then they weren't

The criticism is valid. It was a pre-recorded demo with 3 bullets and they got one wrong. Easily could have fact checked it before publishing it.

It would have been forgivable in a live demo, but they didn't do one because they "lost"[0] the phone.

0 - There's a chance they didn't do the demo on purpose because it wasn't ready.

Could it be part of the aftermath of the layoffs?

The reaction to the layoffs is a good example of this.

Lots of CEOs in the past have conducted layoffs pretty much the same way-- notify everyone at the same time (per local laws) and write an email blaming themselves as the cause.

Yet the media ran article after article for almost 2 weeks with personal stories about how people felt particularly slighted by Google, when they did it pretty much the same way as other companies.

Amongst 12,000 people at any point in time, they will be doing normal life things-- like feeding their baby at 2am-- when they got the email. Yet somehow this became the basis of so many "Google doesn't care about its employees" stories.

I stopped using google and almost don't use SO for programming related searches, my daily driver is chatGPT even when sometimes it gives bad answers. Chatbots were useless garbage from the get go and I hated them and NFT is, well NFT.
