Maybe it’s just what you know but every time I’ve used Garmin Connect it’s felt like a dumpster fire compared to Strava. Even for route planning (years ago) which I would not say Strava is fantastic at, it still seemed worse. YMMV

Are any apps at all actually good for route planning especially on a bike? It seems like that this is something in software that just sucks. I don't even bother anymore, I open up a topographical map and figure out routes by hand. No more turning left across six lanes from a stop sign. No more route thats "mostly flat", aside from the 400ft of undulating terrain that saps you. No sharing the road with semitrucks that…

I use ridewithgps.com, but rely heavily on my own local knowledge to avoid problem areas.

A few years back, I noticed a morbid topic in their forums about a user requesting a feature but a few years later getting diagnosed with a terminal illness before Strava delivering on the feature[0]. I posted it on HN but got flagged[1]. I still find it eye opening, a reminder that the code we write are products impacting the finite life of other people. Maybe we should have more modular, more open software as a sta…

It is modular. You could download the route GPX, and reverse it yourself.

Sure but I would like to see something more integrated. Browsers are a good example actually, allowing extensions to add all kind of "missing" functionality on websites. We don't have that on mobile or desktop apps and would have been nice. It's one of the strengths of browser based apps.

From discussions I've had with people at Strava, they're trying to be more focused on implementing a few key features really well. When the original founders returned in 2018 or 2019, the app had a ton of features that had been half integrated, couldn't be found in order to be used, etc etc. They paired back things that weren't working, moved to focus on revenue (as they weren't going to be able to grow into the soci…

Re: "key features really well", they're not even doing this. My normal morning jog goes under a large bridge. This often confuses my phone's GPS, leading it to return a spurious point or two a kilometer away. Strava is completely incapable of detecting these spikes (accelerating to 200 km/h when running is normal right?) and offers no way to edit them out afterwards, meaning all my speed and distance records, progres…

What phone are you using? This surprises me because most phones are using some sort of sensor fusion to deal with this exact issue.

Note: this restriction is limited to THIRD PARTY data, so: Strava -> Apple Health, still works Garmin/Fitbod/3rd party app -> Strava -> Apple Health, no longer syncs. IMHO this is better for me because now I don’t have duplicates in Apple Health and can sync to both services. But to each they’re own I guess.

yeah strava (understandably) wants to upsell you on premium features in the app, they don’t just want to be some middleman for your Garmin app

No one would actually do this though. You could do this with a browser just fine with an extension but no one is going to spend their time adding advanced features to someone elses paid product. It would also risk breaking on every change.

Then change the economic model too

I'd never use Strava as my aggregator. I pipe all my Activity into Apple Health and then push the ones I want to be on Strava from there. It seems that Strava agrees with me - which is a bit odd.

The author says that many of those companies have shitty apps that don’t load the data properly and strava was cleaning that up.

All of the (Garmin, Strava, Apple, and Google [who is trying really hard but failing]) want a monopoly on your health data. Garmin is the only one I actually trust currently, as they've shown 0 willingness to monetize your health information. The Strava/Garmin relationship is an interesting one: Strava has the social network, Garmin has the best devices [for serious Athletes, not casual users]. Garmin Connect is pret…

I guess their huge data breach that they didn't notify and spent weeks fixing doesn't phase you, but it punted me out of their system.
