This shouldn't be surprising to people. The NBA has a bigger fanbase in China than in the USA. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-10-09/china-s-5...

It seems really random that the Chinese are so into NBA. What next, Greeks being really into American gangsta rap music?

Are Americans unaware of how influential their own cultural export is? Have you not noticed how in every city you can find people wearing Yankees baseball caps with that characteristic logo?

Most countries have rappers now, emulating the style.

If there's a village out there that doesn't buy American cultural products, there is someone whose job it is to sell it to them.

Here's another angle. The increasing censorship within China leaves less and less opportunity for the greater Chinese population to learn about the capabilities of other countries. A few examples of excellence that are still available to Chinese citizens are the NBA, Apple products, US education and Tesla cars. Most nations export excellence of some type to China.

Having these examples in their hands or on their screens likely initiates a mild cognitive dissonance: "The CCP news tells me how terrible the USA is, yet, these elements in my life are excellent beyond what is created by my own country." It's reminiscent of Russian defectors who couldn't rationalize the images they were shown of US poverty, illustrated by films from the Great Depression wherein the 1930s streets of New York were clogged with cars. Or, Boris Yeltzen visiting an American grocery store in 1989, and being overwhelmed at the variety of products and full shelves [0].

As the reins of censorship and propaganda tightens in China, there may be less and less of the world to pierce through and belie the narrative they are fed. Perhaps we should not abandon them any sooner than we must.

With that said, if it's a deliberate approach, we need to get the messaging right. The NBA should stick to 'we are ambassadors for the USA to the world' and leave any politics at that.

What is their stance on other political messaging or activism - for instance putting BLM on jerseys or kneeling? EDIT: comments suggest that the NBA does allow some political message like BLM. It seems like the NBA is now a political organization that is picking sides. Given BLM’s leadership are open, self admitted “trained Marxists” ( https://www.bostonherald.com/2020/07/09/say-you-want-a-marxi... ) and those suppor…

They're quite supportive of profitable activism. https://www.nba.com/article/2020/07/03/nba-union-approve-soc...

Wow that is worse than I expected. Why politicize sports, a respite from the rest of our lives?

And the slogans are often dangerous - for example “group economics” is effectively calling for racial and political Balkanization via our economy (boycotting taken much further): https://atlantablackstar.com/2015/09/22/group-economics-key-.... When we all self organize to practice “group economics” based on our tribe, what is the point of a union? It seems like we would be a nation in name only, and at best, we would practice a tyranny of the majority.

Which is why millionaire players and coaches are absolutely mute (or are muted) on any China issue, or claim that the issue is complicated . I think it's healthy to remind people, from time to time, how Hollywod (e.g. Tencent), the NBA, and other American institutions have sold themselves to CCP money.

Not sure why amznthrwaway is being voted down, but he has a good point. Americans are used to others having to tiptoe around their sensibilities, and now they're finding out what adhering to a foreign culture's value system is like.

> Americans are used to others having to tiptoe around their sensibilities

Always seemed quite the opposite to me, so much so that the most ardent opposition to "American sensibilities" is from inside America itself.

this is about the NBA kowtowing to the CCP, no one is surprised you can buy fake shirts somewhere

I can definitely concede that the NBA is acting cowardly, but I feel like the amount of hate/attacks NBA is receiving is disproportionate. Essentially all global businesses appease China to varying degrees and NBA is being singled out because of their outspokenness on US-related issues. And denigrating companies because they did not speak about ALL issues would simply result in them avoiding all contentious issues. F…

The NBA has had a voice on the matter, they could have stayed quiet like you mentioned, but they chose to side with cruelty.

When their main star, Lebron, publicly called out the critiques on China for their treatment of Hong Kong “misinformed”, it sought to normalize oppression, condoning dictatorship practices and cruelty.

The NBA has a powerful speech platform that should be used responsibly.

It's spycraft, a way for US culture and influence to penetrate China. It's deliberate.

If anything, it seems more like spycraft for Chinese culture and influence to penetrate the U.S.: American Basketball vs. Chinese Hardball: Guess Who Won https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/13/world/asia/china-nba-cens... The difference is that supporting BLM earns them more money. Supporting Hong Kong loses them money. Don't make the mistake of assuming anyone with the power to make these types of decisions gives a single shit about the humanitarian aspect of any of these things.

The next generation will realize how pretending to be for a cause is worse than not supporting it. I saw an ad for bamba socks. For every pair you buy we will give a pair to a homeless shelter. Sounds good but those socks are like 25/30 dollars for a pair. If they really cared they would take that 25 dollars and buy cheap white warm socks in bundles. For 25 dollars you could get 100 pairs. But they don't care but do…

I'd never heard of this brand so I had a look. I'm not sure where you got 25-30 dollars from. The average seems somewhere around $10-15/pair.

https://bombas.com/collections/mens-ankle-socks

And those cheap white 100% cotton socks you mention are not at all warm (especially when wet), durable or odor resistant. The company claims to donate socks that are at least as good as the ones you purchased, if not better.

Realistically though, CBP isn't going to come after you if you're buying a few hundred bucks of apparel for personal use.

You can find yourself on a CBP list if you import counterfeit goods. https://www.racked.com/2018/1/8/16849298/amazon-counterfeits...

So the risk is being unable to purchase totalitarian favors? If you're that worried, have the package addressed to a different nym.
