IMO the analogy doesn't hold up very well. Outsider art is often very good, and outsider programming seems like a weird idea (do startup hackers have less training than BigCo employees?) That's because there are only 17 wallpaper groups ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wallpaper_group ). Any _repeating_ pattern must match one of them (non-repeating patterns by definition do not)
