Maybe that right is not worth the trade off

Unless you change the culture it will be just like the drug war. Firearms familiarity and possession are a cultural rite of passage for ~most males in the USA and there is no way to regulate that in a way that meaningfully stops it short of perhaps large-scale death penalty. Pretty much everyone in Europe that wants a gun can have one within a couple weeks, the reason they don't only has a little to do with the law.

The drug war that the US government created?

American institutions were set-up prima facie to be racially-motivated. Explicit references have been removed, but a lot of the structural elements that supported those explicit references remain. I know many people recoil at the idea, because it seems like an affront to their personal self-image and the national ethos (or at least its marketing), but I generally hold that if an institution acts in a way that's consi…

> American institutions were set-up prima facie to be racially-motivated the history of the United States is a collection of States and territories, forming under very different legal conditions over 100+ years or so.. that blanket statement is without context or detail aka insufficient.

Hard to give an entire 8th grade history curriculum in this setting. So thars an exercise left to the reader.

It's very easy to double down and reinforce your own past thinking rather than re-examining it. It's also very easy to "play a role", even as consequences play out; "reasoning" like "I will do X, then they will do Y which I don't want", rather than stepping back and thinking "if I do X, Y is likely to happen, I don't want Y to happen, so what should I do differently ". They assumed they were going to win , and thus e…

I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them have already spent money in anticipation of a favorable judgement. Cops are largely immune from facing negative consequences so it was probably an incredible shock to lose.

Which is funny because they still don't get negative consequences. Outside of thr continuation of social shaming. This happened before ANTI SLAPP laws were passed in Ohio, so they just don't get rewards for their deserved shaming.

I have a potentially silly question, and obviously naive - but why so many drawn guns? Fun music videos aside, what was the background here? Were they coming in on a Massive gang fortress? Or are all the stereotypes of American police forces true and they just come guns a-blazing all the time? I mean, that wasn't even police officers with hand guns, they have army-like guys with massive automatic rifles, and they see…

A shady confidential informant lied and told the police that the house was a kidnapper's den with people chained up in the basement. The subsequent bad behavior of the police after they realized they were wrong prompted the drama to come.

I got pulled over in Cleveland and had a cop point a gun at me and threaten to shoot - I was apparently wearing the wrong color on the wrong side of town with out-of-state plates and reached for my ID instead of waiting for the cop to tell me to get it. In later stops I've been admonished many times for not preemptively getting out my ID, but I really can't help thinking about almost getting my brains blown out for g…

Hands on the steering wheel for your and the officers safety until they ask you to do something. It really is not that difficult you can always just ask. Legally speaking a traffic stop means you are detained = follow orders. They don't know you or what you could be capable off.

> Hands on the steering wheel for your and the officers safety until they ask you to do something.

Such advice always seemed weird to me, but I suppose that is because I just haven't ever encountered a paranoid cop

> of a statistical nature. (True) … should be expected to match. (False) If a group is more likely to be X than the average population then being a member of that group is statistical evidence you are X. Really when referring to statistical evidence here it’s an indication the evidence is of a very low standard not a high one. He provided evidence that cops are more likely to be white supremacists which doesn’t actua…

> He provided evidence that cops are more likely to be white supremacists This is the crux of the matter. I don't agree with that statement. I believe the provided evidence does not support that claim in any meaningful sense. I would at least agree that it suggests to seriously entertain the possibility though. I'm not sure what to make of your true/false response. Suppose I claim that apples have a higher chance of…

> Evidence that someone at some point made an effort to put poison into the apple supply does not directly support that claim. However if credible it is certainly cause to entertain the possibility.

Go from the other direction suppose you had millions of cases. By your logic 1 cases is not evidence. Two cases is therefore 0 + 0 = 0 no evidence. Thus by induction 1 million cases is still not evidence. Instead 1 case is weak evidence because each individual cases adds up.

For more rigorous analysis see bayesian statistics.

Further the article isn’t referring to a single solidity case but instead multiple independent events.

ok - then most 9th graders would know that slavery was explicitly illegal in many US States from the day before they were founded.. Race-based slavery is not at all unique to the USA. Only people who do not know history think otherwise.. So this commentor a)does not know 9th grade level US history, and b) does not know high school level world history.

yes agree - education is an exercise for the reader.. you have to actually read something to learn from books.

You had a week to deliberate and digest this thread, and your retort shows you do not know what prima facie is.

And yes, slavery is not an American invention. But this topic is about American culture in regards to police and how they harass people (with a bias towards minorities) in "legal ways".

Again, hard to cover all the subtleties in HN. Research Jim Crow laws as a starting point for research.
